I have an ATV 3rd Gen that has 7.2.2 software installed. I’m looking to be able to view my media on my PMS. I am using a Synology NAS as a PMS. I’ve searched about this, but keep seeing something about “PlexConnect” I am unclear on if “PlexConnect” is different than a Plex Media Server. I want to test this using my Synology NAS PMS. Then my ultimate goal is to install PMS on a Raspberry Pi and bring it with me Camping. I will load some of my Plex media on a USB Drive connected to the Raspberry Pi and then stream this media to my Apple TV 3.
It’s different and third party -> https://forums.plex.tv/categories/appletv-plexconnect
an ATV3 wont work out too well used offline. you’d be much better off just using a media player like Kodi on your raspi rather than complicating it all with a client/server setup and devices which are designed to be connected to the internet full time liek the ATV3.
- I have been running Plexconnect for God knows how many years in my two Apple TV3 without having a problem.
- I have a NAS where Plexconnect is running with other software like plextv and a few more to find what I want to see automatically, movies or tv shows, which allows me to take a hand off approach to managing the digital content I want to watch.
- If you already have an ATV 3 lying around, it is a good option as long your NAS isn’t a bare bones one. My sinology is a legacy 1512+ model bought during 2012 and i still use it 24/7/365 whiteout a hickup.
- When I am out my house, if where I am going there is free or dirty cheap WiFi, I stream the content directly from my the Plex Server in the NAS to the hockey puck, the Apple TV 3. I have a domain and a free fixed ip4 and plenty of symmetrical bandwidth due to the fiber (Fios) because I don’t need to change anything in the configuration of the hockey puck or my network. If there isn’t WiFi but there is good 3G and above I stream in HQ directly to my iPad Pro 12,7 over mobile because with a monthly data cap of 20G, I ‘m always far from hitting the max. data allowed and there is always enough for as many movies I would consume.
- That way since the system works alone to find the digital content I want, I see the movie or episodes released that same day.
