Nas playback question

Hi! I just got a new router that can used an attached USB drive as network storage. Right now I run Plex on an Dell T3500 workstation (using a directly attached USB drive). If I move my Plex library to the network drive, Will Plex have to download the files back to the Dell, then feed them to the client from there, or will the client pull the file directly from the network location?

Thanks,

Mike

If you’re just using that USB drive as network storage, all the traffic / streaming will still go through the Plex Media Server on your Dell T3500. With a supported NAS you can install your Plex Media Server on that device and stream straight from there – though NAS models tend to be significantly less powerful / more limited in their streaming capabilities which can cause trouble if you need to transcode a movie.

Well crap.

And the FireStick client seems to have trouble with certain codecs. Testing a really high-quality movie, first it told me it wouldn’t play it, then I started the movie on a different client, then when I went back to the FireStick it resumed and played no problem.

I guess I’ll put all my high-quality vids on the USB-NAS and use VLC. I could jump forward and back as much as I wanted using VLC, no problem at all. The Plex client started freezing right away.

Thanks for the info tom80H!
