Helping a friend play downloaded Plex media through his NAS drive

I may explain this in a convoluted way, so apologies in advance!

My friend recently moved to an area here that has abysmal internet. He’s not able to stream anything from my server because it constantly stutters and buffers. His recent workaround was to download the files and play them that way, which works, but when he casts them from his PC he’s not able to control the media (play, pause, rewind) since it’s being cast from his PC. He can’t download the file from the Plex app on the TV itself since there wouldn’t even be close to enough storage.

He bought a NAS drive and has it hooked up to his network and TV. We’re trying to figure out the best way for him to be able to download the movies from my server and play them on his TV through the NAS server so that he’s able to control them with the TV remote. Is that downloading them to his PC, then copying them to the NAS server?

He’s using an LG CX65, and LG, unfortunately, has one of the worst interfaces/media players, so that’s what’s causing these extra annoyances. I suggested maybe getting a Roku Ultra and either an SD card or connecting the NAS to that. Would the Roku even allow the NAS to be external storage, or would it only read from it?

Any advice, tips, or admonitions about how dumb we are welcome! Thanks for the help!

Why doesn’t he just setup his own Plex server?
Does his NAS have the capability to run PMS?
Do you live within driving distance?

Well, he’s set up his own Plex server on the NAS itself, but the TV still can’t detect it.

Yeah, he’s not too far away.

Ah, well that’s a different problem.
I think getting his server working is going to be the best fix.

Well, I just realized he has to have Plex Pass to download my movies, so that’s one problem solved.

But the TV refusing to see his server is so frustrating. I’m going to go over tomorrow and do it myself. Troubleshooting over the phone is an exercise in misery.

It’s probably something simple.
