NBN and no remote access? Please read

I’m not having this issue anymore but I want to create a thread to help others who may have this issue. Hopefully a few people stumble across this through Google and it helps them so they don’t go through what I went through. It may be good for Plex to document this as a lot of Australia is on the NBN network so many, many others will face this issue. My ISP is Aussie Broadband but this will happen with other ISPs, too.

So I recently got NBN FTTC internet. I moved my Plex server to my property and opened all the correct ports but Plex was saying ‘It looks like your server may be connected to the internet through multiple routers or other network devices. Try connecting it directly to your primary device, or visit our support site for more information about troubleshooting this “Double-NAT” scenario’

If you have NBN and are having this issue, simply call up your ISP and ask to opt out of CGNAT. It’s a simple phone call that’ll resolve your issue. Some ask for a reason behind your request so if they do ask simply tell them the truth and say you need remote access to your Plex server.

Hopefully this is of some help to people in future.

Many thanks

Whether or not you are allocated a CGNAT IP address is dependant on your RSP. This is not an NBN issue, they are a layer 2 network provider.

It’s not a blanket fix but this will still be an issue for many other NBN users depending on your ISP. Aussie Broadband is a large provider they allocate CGNAT IPs

I had similar issues myself more recently, but I had no idea you could just call and opt-out of CGNAT - so thanks for the write-up!

Free static IP used to be a feature of Exetel but looks like that are rolling out / rolled out CGNAT also.

They are, but you can also call and explain that you want to opt-out. I just told Exetel what I do for work, and that I needed to be able to access my network remotely. They’re porting my existing ADSL static IP to my NBN connection.
