If you have room for a second SSD, consider adding one for storing all Plex data separately.
You can follow this guide for migrating them to the new drive: Moving Metadata on Windows
Once you have verified that the move was successful, do this:
- export the content of the Plex registry branch and put the reg file into a safe place
- unplug the new “Plex” drive
- nuke your Windows installation and install everything anew, including Plex server
- stop Plex server and its “Plex updater service”
- attach the Plex drive. Make sure that it is getting the same drive letter as it had before.
- Verify that you can still read and write to the drive under your current user login. (this should be only an issue under some rare circumstances, but better be safe…)
- If your Plex drive has a different drive letter than it had under the previous Windows installation, open the .reg file in notepad.exe and change the drive letter in the key
LocalAppDataPath
and save the change.
Double click the .reg file to import it into the registry. - log off from your Windows user account
- wait a few seconds
- log in again
- start Plex server from the regular Start menu
The above only applies to the Plex data, not the media files themselves. All the media files must still be available under their previous drive letters and/or network share names as well.
