[Need Help] Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD Ryzen 3600 to build a simple PMS?

Hi All!

Before we start:

I know that this thread is not easy to respond to, but some doubts come to my mind… I am not looking for a 100% sure answers so dont worry about comment simple aspects.

Ok! here we go:

Six months ago I build an Intel i5-8400 and it is working great…but now I have to share the PC with other people. To keep my server running 24/7 I decide to build a dedicated PC. I don´t have a budget to build another i5-8400, I have some spare parts that a plan to build this new machine. Please help me to decide what to do.

It will run:
Windows OS W10 1909
Server Version# 1.18.8.2527

Choices:

Build an “Old PC”:
Intel Core i-7 3770 (not k)
Gygabyte B75M D3H rev. 1.2
4x 4 GB DDR3 GEIL GEC34GB1333C9SC (1333 Mhz)
NVIDIA GEFORCE 1050 Ti
SSD SAMSUNG EVO 850 500 GB

or

Build a “New PC”:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600
GIGABYTE B450M DS3H
1 x 16 GB DDR4 Hyper Fury HX424C15FW/16 (2400 Mhz)
NVIDIA GEFORCE 1050 Ti
SSD SAMSUNG EVO 850 500 GB

My use:

  1. Transcode on the fly files (720p / 1080p not 4 K) to 3Mbit file and stream to outside my network to max 4 users. Clients can use many different devices (TV SAMSUNG / Android / iOS devices), My internet connection Cable 240/20 mbits.

  2. Sync my content to clients (iphone / ipad / android)

Please help me to decide :slight_smile:

IMO you are better of using the current i5-8400 as the plex server and use the built in intel gpu for transcoding.

as far as your i7-3770 vs ryzen 5 3600

Hi @TeknoJunky!

The performance of the AMD is better but as I am planning to transcode I am afraid to use AMD and not be able to transcode because it does not have Quick Sync. In case I choose the AMD should I add The Geforce 1050 Ti or just use the AMD processor GPU?

I don’t know if plex supports the amd gpu, you could try it and if you have problems just install the 1050.

I think your best bet is to keep your plex server on the 8400, plex can use the quicksync of your cpu without needing a separate gpu.

use the AMD+1050 for your main/gaming pc.
