I’m sorry for the generic topic but what it is I guess is that I just need help setting Plex up. I thought I had the hang of it but then things don’t seem to be working as I expect they would and am unsure what to do, or what I did, etc…
I’ve tried to get some help in the past in regards to more specific topics but it seems as if maybe that stuff was too advanced for me.
Maybe it would help if I explain my setup and can take this topic from there…
I have
2 WD My Cloud Drives (plex app not able to be installed directly on drive)
1 WD My Cloud Mirror Drive (plex app able to be installed directly on drive)
1 WD My Cloud Home Drive (plex app able to be installed directly on drive)
When I originally set it up the way it seemed I had to set it up was make a different server for each different kind of drive. So I have
Server 1 (has movies and TV from the 2 WD My Cloud Drives)
Server 2 (has music from the 1 WD My Cloud Mirror Drive)
Server 3 (has movies from the 1 WD My Cloud Home Drive)
I am under the impression I don’t need all the excess servers and I should be able to make one server and point the movies section of the server to all of the drives that have movies on them…all of the drives that have TV on them…and all of the drives that have music on them.
But since the drives are all different and have a different setup I’m not sure that is possible…and maybe I did set things up the correct way in the first place with three different Plex servers? Plus, the My Cloud Home setup is different than the others that it creates a Plex section specifically on the drive with specific Plex folders that you have to have the files in for the server to access them from the My Cloud Home drive.
With that being said…the 2 WD My Cloud Drives have to have the computer on and Plex server running for access to the files through Plex mobile apps… but because the My Cloud Mirror and the My Cloud Home are able to have the Plex apps installed directly onto the drive…they don’t need a computer on and Plex server running. Ideally I’d like to have all WD My Cloud Home Drives for everything but what I have currently is what I have so I’d like to figure out a way to work with that.
I’ve been adding lots of music to the WD My Cloud Mirror Drive but the new music doesn’t seem to show up and refresh on Plex. It is set up to scan my library automatically so I’m not sure why it hasn’t updated. If I find the scan library files button it will update but if it is set up for automatically wouldn’t it already be updated when I open it, especially since the Plex app is installed directly on the drive and doesn’t need the computer on and server to be running for access?
Also…last time I looked at this server I have set up for music it was saying it was an unsecure server or something of the sort and kept giving me errors and cautions and what have you. First time I had seen that… and for some reason it was separating this as a different server. So then I had two servers for music pointing at the same drive but I could only access the unsecure one. For whatever reason I don’t see that upon launching the web Plex server tonight.
Also, many times it tells me there is an update to the server, update now, etc… When I’ve done that in the past it messed up everything and wouldn’t let me access anything once I updated. I’d love to keep things updated but if it is going to screw things up to a point where I can’t access anything - then why update?
Based upon the information I’ve provided would it be advisable to somehow delete all the servers and start over? If so, how do I do that. I guess I’d lose some of the metadata/tag updates I’ve made to some files, which would suck… but I’d rather have this set up in the cleanest manner possible.
But…again… with what I’ve said above, with having three different types of drives I’m not sure if setting everything up under one server would even be possible. I hope if it is, there is someone here who can guide me in that direction.
Sorry again for some of the general questions of concern and overall confusion on how to use the Plex software to my advantage. It appears I’m not skilled enough to figure this out through trial and error like I have been with other things in the past.
Also…for what it’s worth to add to the conversation - I always have access to these drives as they are mounted to my computer. So it’s not like the drives are otherwise unavailable that Plex somehow has a problem connecting to them. Plus I’m able to access the files through the different WD apps remotely.
Thanks in advance for taking the time out to provide some help an feedback. It is greatly appreciated!
