so far I only have 1 mkv file that shows up with chapters on roku devices. one is a roku stick one is a brand new. as of today roku ultra. other mkv files from a rip of the same dvd show no chapter thumbnails. Is there anything special i have to do in makemkv to have it create chapters and is there anyway to check that the mkv file does infact have chapters encoded in it?
Please bear with me ive only been ripping mkv files for about 2 weeks so some of my questions might seem very silly. im grateful for any help i can get
If chapters exist, MakeMKV will include them by default. They will be noted in the description of each title on the disc. If you click on the caret next to Chapters, it will list all the chapters and you can edit their names if desired.
There are many ways to determine if an existing file has chapters. Three ideas:
Play the file using VLC. Look in Playback → Chapters. If they exist, they’ll be listed
Analyze the file with MediaInfo, which provides a lot of good information on MKVs/MP4s/etc. It will list any chapters along with their name & timestamp.
MediaInfo is a good tool and is very handy when analyzing media files, troubleshooting problems, etc. Recommend you load it on your system if you have not already done so.
Play the file in Plex Web. Click on the Chapter indicator. You’ll see them if they exist. Works with other clients as well.
MKVToolNix is another good tool for working with MKV files. The Chapter Editor lets your edit names, adjust timing, etc. The Multiplexer portion lets you mux audio/video/subtitle/etc tracks in/out of files, combine/split MKVs, etc. The Header Editor lets you rename tracks, set languages, etc.
Chapterdb.org was a decent site to look up chapter names for movies. Unfortunately it has been offline for quite some time. Plex has a read-only archive of it at chapterdb.plex.tv.
Be aware that all the data in chapterdb.org is user contributed and that chapter names and timings can vary based on DVD vs Blu-ray, country of issue, etc. So consider it a tool, but not necessarily a 100% reliable tool.
i loaded 2 files into vlc and both do contain chapters but i dont see the chapter indicator that the yellow arrow is pointing to is there something else i need to do?
well i finaly found a way to make chapters work. switch to emby
Emby picks up all the chapters in all my media that have chapters.
Now that i know that the chapters do in fact exist can someone tell me how to do a clean install of plex without having to reinstall my os?? Im guessing there is something thats corrupted on my system.
