Nested Collections

No plans for nested collection support. We all know this is because the users want this, therefore, it’s an automatic no from Plex.

Planned work, translates to as always lip service…the feature might be possible sometime in the next decade, which also translates into a big no.

Hello fellow users,

Request for realm folders.

I see there’s a fair amount of demand for them (2018 to date)… but I see the addition of a Realm folder (recursive or not) as valuable for end users, as well as easier management on the server. That’s what Information Technology should be about: making difficult things easier.

We can create folders for movies, TV shows, music, and other things in the library. (Request) Can special folders be created (for example, a “realm”) to hold a collection of other folders?

For example, you could create a “Star Wars” folder to store movies and TV shows belonging to that realm.

The same applies to creating a “Star Trek” realm or any other realm of your choice.

Folders within a realm automatically inherit the access rights of that realm (which doesn’t mean they can be revoked).

Regards,
P

Late to the party but adding my request for nested collections. It would be the single best improvement Plex could make. Appreciate the ask has been out there for a long time now, but I live in hope!!

Same. I don’t need to see all 12 Friday the 13th films in my “Halloween (Season)” collection. It would be nice to see 1 instance of Friday the 13th in that collection, then click on it, and it brings you to the actual Friday the 13th collection…

Just as a note to any future hopefuls of this feature: If you’re just starting with Plex, stop before you get too deep and go with Jellyfin or something else. The writing is on the wall: Plex sold out and stopped listening. If you’re not the 3 or 4 Plex employees watching the ad supported crap or rentals, your voice doesn’t matter. They’re going to let these gaping voids in the REAL product exist because they don’t want to promote any home plex media servers because they want to get away from that segment completely (and abandon its primary user base). The last joke of a “Pro Week” Q&A all but confirmed it. Not sure where they thought I wanted my Plex Pass money to go - it definitely wasn’t for features nobody asked for. So sub-collections/nested collections or any substantial feature adds for Plex Media Servers are HIGHLY unlikely. Forget Plex, they forgot you.

Plex come on.. where is this???

Setting up Plex, this is definitely a wall everyone will run into.
Causing people to look for alternatives with deeper library management.

I have collections for decades, tone, shared universes, and in the case of Doctor Who, which Doctor it is. I would love to be able to have one big Doctor Who By Doctor > subcollections for each Doctor, or Sort By Tone > Grimdark or what have you, By Shared Universe > Marvel Cinematic Universe. Categories is not the place for that as it specifically uses genres (and, again, no subdivisions). This is one major feature I wish were implemented (along with non-matched TV cast lists since I have some shows that aren’t in any database).

Listen to the people. Do you hear them sing?

Very sad that this core functionality is going missing in favor of BS features that nobody asked for or wanted. This is the third thread I have visited today where the request is very popular, and simple, and NOTHING has been done for years and years and years. So glad my Plex Pass money is being thrown away for crap I will never use.

I want this as well.

I’m surprised this isn’t there yet, but it’s much needed (i.e. Planet Collection > Frozen Planet Collection | Blue Planet Collection etc.. or Marvel Cinematic Universe → Phase 1 | Phase 2 | Phase 3 etc..)

Absolutely NEED this feature. I have so many collections and it makes the home page load very slowly. I use custom collections for very specific tropes/mood/subgenres/seasonal and franchise collections. It would be nice to group them so I can at least reduce the load time of the home page and also reduce the burden on scrolling, e.g. “Horror Collections” with collections listed - “hillbilly horror” , “supernatural” , “slasher” , “body horror”, “found footage.” So its one row on the home page, instead of 5, and you can find exactly the kind of movie you’re in the mood for. And if you’re not into horror, you have only 1 row to skip instead of 5.

My collections page has over 500 collections so its not easy to just scroll through the list that way either, especially on a TV. Please - Plex Product team - this use case would make Plex so much more amazing. I would pay for another Plex Pass just to get this feature.

2026, still waiting for this feature.

I have a bunch of sport videos and would like collections for each sport and then collections within them for each season.

I would also like the ability to put a collection of Movie collections on the home screen to easily see what movie collections I have to pick what to binge.

Would also be good to do this for the sport too, so I have access to all the different sports from the home screen in one row.
