Netflix Spam?

Team,

Since January 1st I started receiving emails from Netflix:

  • “start watching today”
  • “only $ for a month of awesome entertainment”

These emails are send to an email address that I have only used (ever) for Plex.
(something like plex1815@my_domain.com).

Q: Has plex sold my email address to Netflix?

DJ

Are you sure this is from Netflix, proper? Not some competing or even illegal service?

Plex doesn’t sell contact data of its user base to anyone.

I took a look at your account. This is very old. I assume you were using this email address for a very long time already.

There was a hack of the plex forum system back in 2015.
See Getting spam emails to my plex email address

The data which were siphoned off contained email addresses. These data are now floating around the interwebs and can be used by anyone. There is nothing Plex can do to prevent it.

It looks to me that somehow Netflix saw fit to use email addresses which were gathered in such a disreputable way.
IMHO a very questionable action by them. It maybe worth asking them directly how they usually acquire marketing email adresses.

It is Netflix. To be more specific: Netflix India ??

Plex doesn’t sell contact data of its user base to anyone.

@OttoKerner Yeah, I couldn’t believe they would do that either.
This email address has indeed been used for a very long time.

Ok, thanks for the quick response!

I have just had a Netflix spam mail that came from info@mailer.netflix.com. It also came to an email account that I created specifically for Plex and have only ever used for Plex. What’s going on here?

Please read above. Apparently Netflix are using email addresses which were harvested from an old data leak.

Ah, sorry I missed that. Thank you for the explanation and info.
