First post here, did some research but did not find anything useful. I’ll try my best to explain my issue:
My setup:
PLEX host is a QNAP NAS (TS453be), media files are also stored here.
NAS and PC is both connected to Asus RT N66U router (1gbe connection)
Will watch PLEX (wired) on my PC, will also watch wirelessly on Fire TV, phone, iPad.
I recently added 10gbe NICs to both my NAS and PC, mainly for the transfer speeds. The two devices are connected directly, not going through the router. Now I have one IP for the 1gbe connection, a new IP for the 10gbe connection. My question is that how can I access my PLEX server using the new 10gbe connection? Do i need to change settings or migrate something? Or do I need to create a new library?
Am I not able to stream wirelessly anymore if I make the IP address change because it’s not connected to my router? I want to benefit from my 10gbe upgrade (hopefully both wired and wirelessly). Will I need a 10gbe switch or something? I ordered an Asus ZenWifi AX6600 (wifi6). Will this improve my streaming quality in anyway?
Simply put, I want to be able to access PLEX via my PC using the 10gbe connection, and also able to watch PLEX on other devices over wifi.
Hope you guys were able to understand my question. If not I will try my best to clarify any misunderstandings. Thanks!
10gbe isn’t going to help your streaming in plex, wired or wirelessly. No idea why you think it would.
a single 1gbe connection can stream a dozen ~100mbit 4k videos before being saturated (assuming the rest of the server could keep up).
windows itself normally should use the fastest connection to the nas (thus choosing the 10gbe connection by default).
If for some reason it doesn’t, then you can simply connect or map to the ip used for 10gbe nas connection.
oh, but you are not gonna get plex to use the 10gbe, since it is directly connected to your PC and not the switch, the 10gbe does not have any internet access.
I have a question, regarding the PLEX using 10gbe part. Don’t know if this makes sense to you:
So if I get a 10gbe switch, can I plug in my router (1gbe), PC (10gbe) and NAS (10gbe) into the switch, will my devices still be able to have internet access and 10gbe speed within my local network? So I can ditch the gigabit ethernet cable and not have to deal with two different IPs.
That’s alright. Streaming speed is not really an issue right now, just thought that improvements (if any) would have been a bonus.
You answered my question. I will be getting a switch just to simplify things. I don’t know much about networking, hopefully plugging everything into a switch will solve my issue. Thanks again.
