Upgraded network to 10GBe, lost access to PMS locally and via app.plex.tv

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9
Player Version#:

In short, http://192.168.1.195:32400/web/index.html works when PC is connected to 1GBe ethernet port and Netgear switch, but fails to connect when using Asus 10GBe card into a MikroTik 10GBe switch. Same applies for using app.plex.tv - works at 1 GBe, fails at 10GBe. Ping works fine to the NAS but fails to 192.168.1.196:32400

I can ping the QNAP NAS which is my PMS, I can manage it using 10GBe connection. But Plex.tv doesn’t work. Interestingly, it may connect and show just me, not rest of family who have log in IDs. But no media plays, and as often it simply doesn’t resolve and says not reachable. Swap network connection to other method and what failed works perfectly.

Clearly it is my networking failure - but most everything connects and runs fine using the 10GBe setup. It’s FIOS, with their G1100 network device feeding my Netgear switch, which in turn feeds the MikroTik switch. Each switch getting a connection direct from G1100, had no effect. Spouses PC uses 10GBe different card and ethernet cabling, mine uses ASUS card and SPF+ and a DAC connection. Neither can connect to Plex, making me wonder what it is about the MikroTik switch and Plex that is making this not work. (It’s a CRS308-1G-8S+1N running version 2.11 of SWos, version 2.12 has issues) It’s a stock Windows 10 hosts file, if that helps.

Everything else about this LAN upgrade has been solid - good speeds, solid connections, just Plex acting out. Appreciate any advice.

Did you enable Jumbo Frames on the MikroTik?

.195 is the QNAP 1G interface and .196 is the QNAP 10G interface, correct?

When connected via 10G, does the QNAP have Internet connectivity? Ping www.google.com, etc.

Does Plex see the 10G interface in Settings -> Network -> Preferred Network Interface?

Try stopping / starting Plex after connecting the 10G interface and disconnecting the 1G interface.

I’m told that the switch automatically handles jumbo frames up to 10218. I’m trying to confirm, the site is down due to maintenance.

My apologies for a key typo

192.168.1.195 (not 196) is the IP for the QNAP NAS running the 5GBe adapter. When upgrading with the new adapter, after ensuring things worked, I went back and made sure the device kept the same static IP that I was using before. That was to keep drive mappings and other setups working.

So that was misleading on my part, I’m sorry.

I assume the QNAP sees the internet as McAfee updates automatically daily, and I get email notifications from the device that use gmail. And QNAP cloud says it’s working.

So, while I am connected to QNAP via the 10GBe Asus card in my PC, I can open Plex, but in a limited way. Instead of seeing me and the family icons all I see is me. When I click on that, I get the basic interface but with a lot of !! signs on things. In Network, it was secure preferred so I changed it unsecure, it let things work but now I can’t get back into it. OK, got back in.

So I go back to the 1GBe ethernet connection on my PC and it all works as we all know it to do. plex.tv links, it opens on the QNAP as it should. This is with the QNAP running a 5GBe lan connection into the MikroTik switch so that piece is working.

IN settings, remote access says it’s working. The WAN address is unchanged, It’s just that when I try and access via the 10GBE card and switch, I can no longer see what I was just seeing using 1GBe card/connection.

However, by doing this I was able to see and set the .195 as the preferred interface.

But when coming back in using the 10GBe link, it remains not working like it usually does. My name is only icon, rest of family missing. I can get in, now my media seems OK and accessible but the web based content is unavailable saying Plex is not reachable.

I’m trying to wrap my head why it says it’s fine if I’m on 1GBe link and says it’s unreachable when using 10GBe link.

All I wanted was faster backups and spouses access to her mapped drives - she does media work, and faster networking helps her out . Up till this, all seemed solid. This side effect is weird, and the fact I get same results using her PC or my own at 10GBe has me looking at the switch, because cutting it out and all is normal (but slower), but accessing Plex through it runs into this…

Just an update.

I was and still am consistently not seeing the log in screen at plex.tv - it pops up blank using 10GBe nic, looks but works fine on 1GBe nic.

But I found some stuff online that had me turn off IPV6 in the 10GBe Nic and in Windows and now when I go to app.plex.tv, it’s a 25/75 chance that it’ll work right. It’s either there is no internet connection or I get the select user screen with my Plexpass ID plus the other family members (25%) or just me with no plexpass icon (75%).

And of course, it all works just finr with the 1GBe nic. Some secure sites time out but then roar back a few moments later. Even this page - it spins for a bit, tries to resolve and then does.

Using the IP 192.168.1.195:32400 to access my PMS server via web now resolves but is same 25/75 on showing just me or showing the entire family. But it used to say no connection despite me being connected to the NAS it is running on.

To share,

I use the QNAP (Aquantia) 10 GbE nic card in my QNAP and have never had any difficulties with it.

The switch in use is the Netgear GS-110 EMX.

All 1 GbE cables are disconnected.
The 10GbE is set manually as the default gateway in QTS
MTU is maintained at default 1500.

Yes, similar to mine just I’ve not used the virtual switch. That Netgear is 2 multigigabit and 8 gigabit, right? I was looking for 4 10GBe ports, And the MirkoTik has them, although the RJ45 adapters add up the cost.

I use the virtual switch because of Container Station.

Make 100% certain of the MTU. QNAP claims one thing and so do a lot of switches but on our LAN (including the gateway) 1500 is how to do it. It really takes a lot of finesse to make it work for very very little benefit at these speeds. It’s great on long haul runs but not this stuff.

Thanks, I double checked the MTU.

n looking through some Amazon reviews of similar Aquantia to mine cards, I came across this -

2020-03-26: I’ve been having issues getting to some websites or connecting to some services. Couldn’t access the config pages of my router or cable modem. Couldn’t connect to Teamspeak. Couldn’t connect to my VoIP softphone. Couldn’t stream to Twitch with OBS. Couldn’t download work units for Folding@Home. If you’re having the same or similar issues, go to adapter properties > configure > advanced, change TCP/UDP Checksum Offload (IPv4) to “Disabled”. Everything is working without any issues now.

Damn if it didn’t fix my issues!

Seriously, once it was changed, boom, back into PLex fast and in full.

I had a fun one today.

I had to do some reinstallation.

In my speeding along with the install, I forgot that thunderbolt ports (where the Akitio/Aquantia connects) is directly on the PCI-E. As such you must authorize it before the kernel will power it up and bring it online. Whoooooops :man_facepalming: lol
