New Audio Engine & Spatial Audio - Works for DTS, EAC3, AC3, Errors with TrueHD

Plex have disabled Spatial Audio on both iOS and tvOS until the issues are fixed.

I don’t even see the new audio stack mentioned on tvOS

Ah, makes sense. I just checked my tvOS app and yes, the “Use old Audio Player” option has been removed.

Updated to the new testflight release 8.21 (6293) and server 1.32.5.7210 and I’m still only seeing Stereo output for AirPods Pro Gen 2. I do have the option to spatialize stereo, but I’m not seeing the Multichannel output that I see with Infuse.

Yeah from what I saw in the release notes it’s just general fixes that are nothing to do with the new audio stack sadly.

Well they’ve added the new “fixed” audio engine to the official release and it’s fixed nothing lol

Nope. There’s nothing in the release notes about anything to do with Spatial Audio. So therefore nothing implying anything has changed.

Lol yes they did but I’m sure I’ll be banned for sharing facts cause this place hates facts and customer complaints

It’s the same release notes as the TestFlight beta build.

There is nothing in “fixed” regarding Spatial Audio. It’s simply the beta build being pushed to more users to get more feedback.

So the public are now beta testers without knowing it. I guess Plex has turned into a AAA game studio.

I can definitely see the confusion as the release notes are the first to mention spatial audio support. Without adding the support back in it would have been a better idea to remove that from the notes on the public release.

Yeah it confused me too.
The new Audio Engine was pulled from both iOS and tvOS betas.
Then re-enabled in tvOS as confirmed by @BigWheel.

Then pushed to stable in tvOS with apparently no changes or fixes according to the release notes at least.

But beyond the fact that hardly anything on tvOS plays as multi channel Spatial Audio and the fact that anything with a TrueHD (with or without Atmos) still doesn’t play at all I haven’t had chance to test much.

Either way it’s all good. Plex will get there and until then I can use Infuse for Spatial Audio.

Hey @BigWheel

I don’t suppose you could confirm if any of the issues mentioned in this thread regarding Spatial Audio have been filed?

Obviously DaveBinnM got involved when it was brought up but realise he is no longer with Plex (a real shame by the way.)

Acquiring the proper hardware, investigating and filing issues was one of the things on my agenda prior to leaving Plex. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to look into it more and file anything before I left, but hopefully, someone else has picked up where I’d left off with looking into these and has filed something :crossed_fingers: :plexheart:

Yeah I appreciate it and know you would have kept us up to date.
No worries if you don’t know or indeed under the circumstances don’t feel obliged to answer, but changes done to the new Audio player are all at Plex end in the background?

I’m just curious why anything with True-HD (with or without Atmos wouldn’t play at all.) Now they all play fine with no updates to the client. Plus when the new Audio player was disabled a while back it just vanished without any client update.

Anyway as I said before you’re gonna be truly missed in an official capacity. Hope you’re fully recovered, as if I recall you weren’t too well a while back.
Also I hope if you haven’t already you find other employment soon.

Sorry I was away for a bit and am catching up with things. I’ll be filing issues.

Some features are enabled via flags. The code is in the client but not turned on until conditions are met. Like some features that are only enabled if someone has a Plex Pass.

No problem. Thanks for getting back.

The one remaining issue for me with Spatial Audio is everything plays as Spatial Stereo. I haven’t seen a single file yet play as Spatial Multi-Channel. So just wondering if it’s on the Plex Radarr to investigate?

Thanks again.

If not, it is now and I will make a report for it.

Much appreciated.

I think the new audio engine was able to play multi-channel audio i.e) leverage spatial audio. But i believe the new audio engine has been disabled now right ?

So the spatial audio being stereo only is back to the status quo i.e) same as the plex client GA release.
