Will spatial Audio be compatible one day with the new Player on Apple TV?

Server Version#: 1.28.0.5999
Player Version#:8,7 (3452)
i’m already more than happy that with TVOS 15 we can benefit of Spatial Audio on Apple TV , but one question remains, cos with heavy 4K movie with Heavy Audio tracks when it’s better to switch to the new player for easier direct play the audio is quite weird , it’s doesn’t sound like stereo , you can have all the voices in the left ear , and most of the rest in the left … it’s really bizarre, but i’m sure it must be hard to implement if it’s not yet ready… yet will one day you think the Plex team will be able to figure how to implement this feature on the new player of Apple TV ? or maybe is it a hardware limitation since it’s a 12 bionic chip ? thx to the team , love you guys .

It’s definitely not a hardware issue.
Infuse on the same (or any other Apple) device does spatial audio perfectly with any audio codec and has done for years.
Rightly or wrongly I assume the incompatibility is with MPV player (the backend of the “New” Plex player.)

Sadly the assumption is based on the fact that as soon as Spatial Audio is mentioned on these forums there always seems to be radio silence.
Perhaps @Stevenson-Price or @DaveBinM can confirm is MPV player is the issue?

seriously ?? didn’t knew that . I’ve tried Infuse like 2 years ago but wasn’t"t convinced compared to Plex … i should check it maybe, but i love Plex, i love the fact the despite having large 50 Gb movie files the new player can direct play most of it . that’s why i would just love to have some news from the Plex team about the new player and when to expect this feature … i really hope soon . Plex is so great , i’ll never regret buying a plex pass a long time ago despite the fact i do not use 80% of it’s features… lol
fingers crossed the Plex team will say a word about it soon ^^

Meanwhile infuse direct plays all of it. No transcoding of HD-Audio to FLAC.

Infuse is improving in features, however it’s still not as pretty as the current Plex UI.
It was a no brainer for me to hook Infuse into my PMS.

I second what @Xhaka is saying in regards to infuse. Plex as a server + Infuse as a player on Apple TV 4K is gonna give you the best playback experience. I use my AirPod Pros a lot and have no issues with spatial audio on infuse.

It never transcodes, stutters, or does anything weird and I have some very large 4K HDR/Dovi mkv files and it plays them all without issue.

I would definitely say if you want to direct play everything and use spatial audio, check out infuse.

i(m gonna check it out , and let’s hope Plex team will give us some news about it xD

Would also like to see this implemented, it’s a nice feature on Infuse.

It should definitely be a high priority to get implemented. I’m using Infuse only for the Spatial Audio.

I just wish that the Plex team would publish an update just to know if they are working to implement it with the new and more advanced player or not , i think they do , but the fact that we do not have any news is not very reassuring … fingers crossed we will get an update about this feature cos it’s quite amazing how this spatial audio work on such tiny devices…

I was initially doing the same. However I’m now using Infuse because of the other issues in Plex on the Apple TV.

Have you guys tried this?

It seems to work here.

It only works on the old player.
Using the old player causes an mkv container to convert to mp4 and it’s also picky about subtitles.

So it really needs implementation with the new player.

i should have time today to merge my Plex library with infuse , i hope i will not any mess ,cos all my media is stored on a Synology NAS… if someone have a tutorial i would be more than happy ^^

it would be cool that someone from the dev team gives us some updates about this , i love PLEX.

Hi sorry. It’s probably a translation issue but can you clarify what you mean by merging Plex with Infuse?

Infuse can plug in to your Plex Server and purely be used as a Plex client.
Infuse will not destroy or change anything in Plex itself.

Anyway good luck and let us know how things go.

Hi , sorry sometimes i use words that do not match , i meant how for infuse to point it to my plex library , but apparently there is an option to “link” directly infuse to the plex library so it’s great.
sorry again English isn’t my mother tongue.

No problem.
As you say, if you directly point Infuse to Plex it will make no changes to Plex at all and will simply see your files as Plex sees them.

I would like a reply from the Plex team as well. I finally ordered infuse, and similar to others, spatial audio is the only reason I have done so.

Probably half my viewing is over headphones, so it’s a meaningful benefit for me.

you guys were so right , it is so simple to use infuse and link our plex account , the yearly plan is not too expensive at 9 euros for me , so i jumped ships… despite the fact that i’ve bought a lifetime plex pass for 150 euros to support this talented team years ago , and i still do , but i really think the devs should make like a dev diary where we can ask some stuff , and have some news about their roadmap too … atm i use Infuse when i need headphones, and the rest of the time Plex, i prefer the way Plex handles multiples servers , and it’s not as easy to customize the library to make it look like the Plex one with the same categories… that’s the only downside i found. i really hope we will get an answer one day… sooner than later … ^^ :crossed_fingers:

As A Synology NAS user who was disturbed to see that the Plex client on the NAS was preventing my NAS to go to sleep , i tried something yesterday , instead of linking my Plex Library to Infuse, i just added a SMB share and guys you need to know this, cos it’s wonderful, infuse will still finds all metadata , and the Ram usage on the Nas is near flat while playing a movie , even CPU usage, so the NAS make no noise, and most of all when you are done , it goes to hibernation , my other huge issue i had with PLEX for years was that with a Sino NAS the NAS would never hibernate, unless you stop the plex client . and this fasten the death of all my drives and NAS even , so i just wanna say that yes Infuse is great, despite some flaws, like less customization, but despite the fact that i bought a Plex pass for lifetime, i think i’ gonna stop using it , cos they would need to fix at least two things, The fact that Sino NAS cannot hibernate while plex is running even if not used, and spatial audio. i just wanted to throw this out to some of you in case you care about energy , and Drive tearing over the years. i will still follow how Plex evolves , but i think the team needs to make some effort to make the process more streamline like Infuse manage to do it . ( i still prefer the Plex interface of course, and i will miss it a bit ) , but i’m so happy to see my NAS sleeping now ^^
