Just want to add another voice to this. I see it whether I’m doing directplay or transcoding. It happens when starting from either the web or from the app, although the app is much worse. Making Plex fairly unusable for my setup. Transcoder seems to just hang despite using some CPU (not all, not maxing out).
Mind telling me a bit more about your set up perhaps we have something in common that may help us figure it out? Have you tried rolling android app back to pre major change and see if that works for you, as that seems to have worked for me so far…

Has any progress been made? Chromecasts are basically unusable. I can’t even transcode down to 480p w/o buffering where ALL other devices on the same LAN can play HD w/o any lag. This is specifically an issue w/ playing on Chromecast. Wifi/Ethernet is not a factor. External streaming also works flawlessly. Chromecasts are also able to stream HD from the internet w/ o buffering. This only affects LAN casting.
It is almost as if the Plex app on the phone is trying to make the server stream externally to then stream it back internal.

It’s running fine on Chromecast Ultra. But on Chromecast first generation it stutter from timer to time.
When I pause the playback for 10 sec and restart the playback afterwards the stutter is gone.
It mostly stutter in the start. Sometimes in the middle of the playback.
Same issue for me, and it only started happening a few months ago. It will play a few seconds and then lag for the rest of the video. Seems to only happen when casting from the Android app, when I cast from a Chrome browser the issue does not appear.
Running Plex server 1.14.0.5470 with a Gen1 Chromecast over LAN. The issue only seems to appear when casting 720p or 1080p video when the audio is in EAC3. With AAC audio I never have any problems.
Really hoping this is resolved soon.
Im having the same issue. Started about a month ago. Thought it was my server but I can stream to non-Chromecast devices just fine. I can’t believe plex hasn’t posted a fix yet…
Same issue, but I think the problem is on the Chromecast side, not on the Plex side. I have tried other software to stream my movies to Chromecast and all have the same issues of lags and buffering. This is appening when I try to cast my local media only, online services like YouTube or Netflix continues to work well with chromecast.

Hello, I am experiencing a similar issue.
I had thought it was the server I was using but I’ve upgraded the hardware and tested and I can watch 3 different movies across 3 different devices (excluding the chromecast) but when I cast to the chromecast it tends to freeze up and buffer every 5-10 mins.
I can cast to the nvidia shield TV perfectly fine but the chromecast seems to constanlty buffer, regardless of the quality.
Really hope this is solved soon, I have not tried to cast from the Web app but I will give it a go and check to see if the results are the same. I’m streaming the files from my NAS over LAN, strong WiFi connection and plenty of bandwidth.
Chiming in to say that I’m experiencing the same issue. Used to work great on Chromecast, now it’s buffering constantly. Every other streaming service works. Plex works perfectly on my PC and phone (both wifi).
I have this issue too… seems to be limited to Plex, not other apps. Netflix, YouTube, GoogleMusic all work fine. When casting to Chromecast 2 (via 5G wifi) it will be playing fine for 5, 10, maybe 20 minutes but then just randomly hang on buffering. Only way to get it working again is to disconnect from Chromecast, close Plex app, and start all over.
Can Plex chime in with any suggested troubleshooting?

I only get this problem with Plex. Never had this problem before a few months ago.
Pretty it’s not a server or connection. I’ve never had a better computer (i5-8800k, 32GB DDR4, SSDs). I have a 16 MB/s internet connection; an Asus AT-88U router so I know my LAN can support the data…
It’s annoying. Normally, the fix is easy, I just need to pause for a bit, but sometimes I lose the remote capability on my phone while it keeps playing so I’m stuck with a stuttering movie while I fight with Google Home, Chromecast and the Plex app…
Please fix this.
I have been using Plex for 4 years and haven’t had issues until recently. Over the last month or so I have noticed that when I watch movies I get buffering issues throughout. I also get a lost network connecting error at times too. My internet is at 60mbps with wifi and I am down to 480p 1.5mbps in viewing video which I hate and still I have these issues.
I have my plex server on my pc installed on an internal hdd which. I am using my wifi within the same network connection to watch movies. I am watching via a smart Samsung tv with the samsung plex app installed directly there. Again, I’ve never had these issues before and now its happening so often that plex is unusable. Can someone help me? I wish Plex had a support line to call especially because I do pay for the upgraded membership. I also have issues with my music library lagging so bad it takes 5 minutes or so to load album art and scroll through my library. So frustrating and ready to start looking for alternatives - not sure what to do at this point
Same issue. Plex user for years. Seems to only be chromecast. The second it buffers I can stop it, restart and its fine for another 2-20 min. Random timing.
Very frustrated as all my TVs use chromecast.
Would be really great if someone could confirm if Chromecast is a supported method to use Plex because like everyone else here I have the same issue even after upgrading the rest of my network equipment. Watching on phone and Surfacepro is perfect but casting fails even at 720p. If Plex does not support Chromecast I would suggest that is a major failure. Starting look at replacement products for Plex.

Can someone from Plex support advise on the issue and if it is worked on?
