Just reading this. Can someone explain to me how itll be a desktop app but doesnt support windows?
If it does support windows then why all the hubbub about lacking HTPC support?

Please explain what you are referring to.
The new player app is running on Windows and it is running on Macintosh.
The current Plex Media Player (PMP) had a “tv mode” that made it work relatively well with remotes when installed on an HTPC.
There will not be similar support (or even a TV Mode) for this new Plex app though it will of course run on Windows.
Then what’s the fuss about killing htpc support? If the app runs on windows it’s an htpc.
Thank cthulhu. I run a small pc through a projector for a 13ft screen. No smart tv will do that.
These ppl want a 10-foot interface that is operable with a remote control. The new app doesn’t have that.
We use a keyboard mouse combo anyway.
My heart started beating again
Yours is a fairly unusual use-case even for HTPCs; a 13 foot screen and you already use a keyboard and mouse. But anyway yeah, you’ll be fine.
Please don’t be condescending.
There are much more things being lost: audio settings, display settings. PMP is more than just a big interface with remote control support.
It wasn’t intended as such. If it came over that way, I apologize.
I just wanted to summarize the main pain point.
So, to clarify, when I read that “TV mode” was no longer going to be supported, that’s referring to a particular user interface, not live TV and DVR function? Is that correct?
Precisely.
Thanks. That’s a relief. That’s all I use it for.
Thanks, all.
A few of the articles implied that Windows support was being taken away. It was not clear to me that they are only taking away “TV mode” and that which goes with it.
Having converted from Kodi a few years back and converting all my content to mkv for streaming, I worried that my projector/windows pc/mouse & keyboard setup was going to become moot. But, as one of the moderator’s stated, that is not the case. Only the TV mode is going away.
I appreciate the quick responses.
I agree, I work at home and primarily use the windows player on my PC and 4k hdr+ monitor. I like when the player is on “Real” video hardware for the transcoding as well as real video/color calibration on good TVs. Please do continue to support all platforms. This is what has made Plex great and worth a lifetime PASS
LOL, only TV Mode is going away what is lost by just that going away? Also are we losing the ability to play offline? That was not super clear in the news article. Just saw the clarification after posting. I was not using TV mode on the PC app, silly when you have a keyboard and mouse.
Why would they bother developing an app without bothering to develop a very common use case for it?
A lot of the lifetime pass early adopters came in this way and keep their PC’s around for gaming, or at least I do. I do everything with the remote or an xbox controller. Why would I ever want the mouse?
I mean really, how much harder is it to make the interface 10ft remote compatible if you’re already porting the app to the new design?
Do it right.
Nepharious, what is considered “Real” video hardware for transcoding? Would not a Nvidia Titan video card be considered “real” and much more so than a $500 smart tv?
It seems that by supporting the PC/Desktop interface they are continuing to support those folks who were attracted to Plex in the first place.
