Why are there no advanced settings in the Plex for Windows desktop application ? ? ? It is utterly ridiculous that an application on a powerful desktop machine doesn’t have advanced settings such as DTS / Dolby passthrough!
When building an application for Windows and Mac why wouldn’t you have the most advanced options available. These are powerful devices that can handle absolutely everything thrown at it! While you’re at it make an option of say Plex for Linux.
@TeknoJunky . . . No I mean this post https://www.plex.tv/en-ca/blog/desktop-af/. Also referring to the latest update that states the standard desktop view is being removed from Plex Media Player! Maybe you should crawl back under your rock until you understand what is going on.
EDIT: So, this next section used to talk about how we were ending support for Plex Media Player in six months, and with it, effectively ending support for HTPCs as a platform. We planned this with the best intentions. tl;dr, modern streaming devices provide a better experience for most people (the vast majority of you have already switched), and not spending energy maintaining PMP would mean we can focus more on making that experience better for everyone. Well, let’s just say that although their numbers are few, the PMP army speaks loudly, in mostly civilized voices, with the occasional conspiracy theory peppered in. So, we hear you, and we’re adjusting our plans a bit:
We will keep PMP in TV mode working as it is today and will fix serious issues which impact the product for the foreseeable future.
We will continue to invest in our player technology on streaming devices both to increase media compatibility, as well as to bring more “HTPC” features there (e.g. video zoom modes). We will also do a better job at communicating their capabilities, as it’s pretty hard to get an accurate picture of that. Look for more information on that soon!
We are now actively investigating the best way to continue supporting HTPCs as a platform.
Why would I want to go and spend $250 CDN on a Nvidia Shield Pro (a good well supported streaming device) that still doesn’t have half the power of my HTPC which has a video card that costs $350??? The argument of not wanting to spend time / money on the devices (HTPC) that built Plex is ludicrous.
I run my setup on a HTPC and absolutely hate the TV Layout. Plex Media Player in it’s current state supports DTS / Dolby passthrough by default. The new Plex for Windows application simply does not. I simply do not understand why they wouldn’t just move the existing functionality which works very very well to the new unified application. It just does not make any sense whatsoever.
The only course of action they should be taking is to make the Desktop application available to all major operating systems (Windows, Mac and Linux) and supporting features such as Passthrough Audio (let the OS decide if it needs to be transcoded), attaching personalized logon info to managed users and focusing on current features. In the other device realm focus first on Android / IOS devices and then if there is a solid case for it branch out from there to your Firesticks and other generic devices.
It has just been a constant barrage of useless features that nobody cares about . . . Just focus on what people want!
That’s dated information (Plex should really take that down). The link was provided above and PMP is still in development after users requested it. You could also consider just being nicer to people.
@Cafe_Diem That really isn’t dated information . . . This morning I installed the latest update for Plex Media Player 2.51.0.1048 and it gives you this message on first launch
The Future of Plex on the Desktop
You are currently using the desktop layout of Plex Media Player. Future versions will only support the TV layout.
Get Plex for Windows for continued support of the desktop layout and to enjoy new features like the ability to download media for offline playback!
Get Plex for Windows!
Now don’t get me wrong . . . I really don’t care if they want to migrate to a new application. What I care about is not having the proper functionality in that new application. Functionality such as Passthrough Audio!
As far as “consider being nicer to people” . . . Maybe he shouldn’t post a smart@$$ comment without being informed of what is going on.
No I mean the functionality that is being removed and limiting my options!
I find it interesting that the release notes for Plex Media Player 2.51.0.1048 says nothing about implementation a message to say they are to remove the desktop layout …
I also find it interesting that this release is the first one in MONTHS that has updated the desktop bringing it to 4.24.1. Not sure what’s going on really !
I updated the post heading . . . If you agree with me then you should bring a little more to the party than what you did. Perhaps even just suggesting a rewording of the post title.
If we are all in agreement then we should be heard!
I agree . . . It was a completely left out of the change-log.
I would even support the move to end the lifetime pass (of which I am a purchaser) and move back to an annual subscription (perhaps a slightly lower cost than current) if that meant hiring competent developers to focus on the features and updates that we want and need.
As to whether they bring pass through functionality to the new plex for windows, is entirely up to them and their development resources and schedule.
I understand wanting to release a new app that has more of a ‘clean start’, but I agree that is was dumb to bring a ‘new’ app that is so far from a replacement of the existing that is missing the functionality for which the original app was mostly used for.
Plex Media Player was never a replacement for VLC . . . VLC is very good at what it does but I don’t want to rely on it for everything. My wife, my kids, my mother all have to be able to use this and a plugin for VLC is not the answer.
They want to relabel the app fine . . . Keep the proper functionality that people expect. Hire developers that know what they are doing and have a proper road map to a feature rich playback environment. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel . . . If the VLC engine works better then use it and embed it into your project as a way to minimize cost and increase value. See the link for documentation https://wiki.videolan.org/LibVLC/.
I would love to have an employee explain what the stats are and give us an accurate graphic representation of usage. A proper road map of the development goals and a transparent overview of what the end goal of Plex as a company is???
I will reiterate that if the problem is actual cash-flow which is preventing from hiring proper developers then they should repeal the Lifetime Pass in favor of an annual membership to keep some reoccurring revenue happening.
It really seems to be a situation where the tail is wagging the dog.
It would seem that development is going off on a hundred different tangents without any real guidance or direction. Just look at how many different options there has been for a Windows based application. Plex Media Player, Plex App, Plex Home Theater and now Plex for Windows.
It doesn’t matter what the application is called or what lipstick you put on it . . . Just make the application work properly!
Let me understand this - PMP 2.51 will only support TV mode (awesome - since PLEX for Windows is the desktop application). However - will it or won’t it support pass-through audio? The ENTIRE point of PMP/PHT is to send unadulterated audio (and in my case video as well) to our AV system.
Otherwise, I 'll continue to limp along with 2.33…
No, the most recent stable release of PMP still supports desktop mode. It does however display a warning on first startup that desktop mode will be removed in a future release.
And you can still use audio pass-thru; you have to configure it from TV mode, but when you switch back to desktop mode the settings “stick.”
