New difficulties with casting content that had previously worked

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2852
Player Version#:

I have had Plex running for a very long time and as such I have a fairly extensive video library. Everything in the library has played at least once, the majority of them more than once.

For the last several months, I have experienced a number of videos producing Error H4 not supported when cast from my android app to my Chromecast device. This has happened through several upgrades of both the android app and the server version. I have not vigorously pursued this because I discovered early on (and subsequently found in the forums) that starting playback on my android before casting actually made things work most of the time.

Before going on, I should state that everything is local on one subnet. Nothing is remote and remote access has not been set up. As I do network security for a living I can completely vouch for this. I note that there is a server upgrade which I plan to install over the weekend; my android is kept up to date automatically. (I wish the server could be!!)

Lately, my wife (of over 50 years) is causing me to revisit this problem because she does not like the extra steps this takes to start playback on a phone or tablet before casting.

I have reviewed the forums and run several Google searches and do not see that this has been resolved, nor have I found any workaround other than the one I already mentioned and use. If there is a fix and I have missed it, please redirect me to that fix.

Also, from what I have read, this issue seems to be a problem only with Chromecast devices and no others., Is this the case?

This problem does not happen with all of the videos in my library, only a smallish number of them. Once a video exhibits this problem once, it happens all of the time with that video. Some videos that have been played many times before have developed this problem, but play perfectly in the android or web app.

Please advise the best way to pursue a remedy of this issue. This is a necessary and useful entertainment medium during these pandemic times when we cannot or should not visit movie theaters.

Thank you.

Sadly, 25 views of my post and NO ONE has anything to say. 4 days and still nothing at all.

once upon a time there were plex people who cared when someone was having trouble. Now, not so much.

R.I.P Plex. You died a silent death and you failed to notice your own passing.

I am having similar problems. All of a sudden none of my content copied from DVD’s will stream to my any of my Google hubs or Chromecasts. Blu ray content is fine, but DVD content at 576p is dead.
