3rd Gen Chromecast h4 Error For All Videos

Server Version#: v1.40.2.8395 (LinuxServer.io docker container)
Player Version#: Chromecast 3rd Gen Plex App
Plex Media Server.2.log (2.6 MB)

Hi all,

since today I’m facing the issue that suddenly none of my library titles can be streamed to my 3rd gen Chromecast. No matter which video I try to play, the Chromecast will show the h4 (not supported) error. I already tested this with multiple videos which I was able to stream without issues just days ago. Also, most of the movie trailers cannot be played back on the Chromecast anymore, but fail with the same h4 error (so far I had one trailer play successfully, but I was too slow to save the meta data). Playing back the same videos on the Android app works instantly and flawlessly.

Tested codecs:

  • HEVC+EAC3 5.1
  • H264+AC3
  • HEVC+AAC Stereo

I’ve already tested:

  • restarting Plex / recreating the docker container
  • factory reset of the Chromecast
  • optimization of the Plex Server database
  • scanning and analyzing library files
  • refreshing meta data
  • disabling hardware transcoding

I’ve read a lot of topics on the famous h4 error, but most of these are related to 4K content and the Chromecast Ultra / wgtv versions, or specific to some content.

Has anyone ever experienced a similar issue? Has there been a breaking change in any of the most recent updates? I’m using Plex exclusively with Chromecast, so this issue completely breaks Plex for me.

Thanks for any hints!
