New Downloads replacing Sync - very slow

The new “Downloads” feature that replaces “Sync”, seems very slow compared to the old Sync. I updated my Android tablet to the new “Downloads”, but my server still refers to the process as “Sync”.

It seems slow as hell, and the GUI on both the Tablet and my W10, seem to be inferior to the old “Sync”.

Can you provide more details? Is your tablet using Android 11?

This is a relatively new Samsung, running 11. My older tablet could sync 10 movies in 24 hours. This system is still working on downloading 6 movies after 24 hrs. Yet I am on a faster LAN network.

See Slow downloads to external storage.

tl/dr Android 11’s new FUSE system slows down access to the sdcard.

Well that’s great news. What purpose would that serve? And is there a work a round? Does FUSE slow downloading from Netflix and Prime also?

I see this has been thoroughly discussed on this thread:

It seems it would have been better to not release “Downloads” until the throttling by FUSE had been fully addressed. I would much prefer to use “Sync” at this point. Trying to sync some movies before going off the grid, and it has turned into a very time consuming process, with no advance warning.

And calling it “slowing down” is a bit of an understatement, it’s more like molasses.

Let’s cool down here, I think it’s clear downloads to SD weren’t tested before the feature was released. It IS a brand new feature after all.

There is a workaround if you have a rooted device, otherwise you have to download to the internal storage for now until the issue is fixed.

No animosity here I love Plex developers. It would seem the the most likely place for a user, that uses sync, would be to download to the expansion card. Who has room for movies on there internal storage. So testing for SD storage would seem to be a priority.

We (me in particular) did test downloading to sd cards. I just don’t have any Android 11 devices so I did not run into this issue. This is the point of allowing users early access so we can identify issues we may have missed internally.

To be clear, as confirmed by the user in that thread, Sync has the same issue. It’s not a feature issue but something with Android 11 we did not discover ahead of time. I don’t know what other downloading programs do.

Thanks for the update.

In my testing, Sync doesn’t have the same issue. Sync saves to external storage at network speed, and Downloads to external storage is the only slow situation

Huh. That doesn’t match the results mentioned in that other thread. Slow downloads to external storage - #12 by struchot

I’ll pass this info along to the devs to see if they can figure out a solution.

I just saw this thread when I searched google for “Plex downloads very slow”. I’m having the same issue downloading to my Galaxy Tab S7. I record OTA tv programs on my server so I can watch them when flying or otherwise off the grid. A one hour HD program is currently taking about an hour to download via the Plex app.
My current workaround is to connect my tablet to my server with a USB cable to transfer the file to my SD card and then use VLC to watch the video. A lot less convenient, but certainly much faster. I never tried Sync before the download feature so I can’t compare one to the other.
Btw, I recently became a lifetime PlexPass subscriber, so I hope the download feature can be improved.

It’s an issue due to Android 11. If your Tab S7 is running 11, then you sill see this problem.

Yeah I had to switch to downloading to the internal SD and its pretty quick. The only catch is you have to have enough extra space to be able to make the switch. It was unusable on android 11 to save to an external SD.

Thank God I searched for this issue, seems like I am not alone - sadly.
This issue writing to external SD cards / Android 11 FUSE is a huge, huge problem.
I am trying to sync my FLAC library to my phone before leaving for a 2 weeks trip and it barely scratched the surface here and I am sort of bummed.

I love all the improvements that Plex is constantly doing but I think I stead of focusing so heavily on UI, it’s an opportunity to stop and spend some time improving the code and general stability, I know there are many other Plex pass users like myself out there that would appreciate that.

Is there a workaround where I can manually copy all the files to the SD card and Plex would recognize it ?
