New Fire Stick 4K useless for Plex

PMS Version 1.18.6.2368
latest Plex App for FireStick I would guess since it downloaded it…
Using WIFI…

just got a brand new fire stick from Amazon…
Installed the Plex App and it does nothing but hang.

If I get to a movie to play then it just shows the circle going around and around.
When it hangs it causes issues with other users on the system.
It also disabled remote access on the server… Only came back after I exited the FireStick app…

I use this TV with a Roku 3 with absolutely no problems
guess that what one gets for trying to update…

loaded the NBC app and it works great…

ya know, i too recently got a brand new firestick 4K only a couple weeks ago and i was actually lucky that i was able to have had it all set up only a couple of days before this recent “update” because if I would have spent that money, hooked it all up, got excited about finally upgrading to 4K, and then NOTHING but BS. i would have been mad. and yet, here you are. in the boat I was almost in. just remove the currently installed version, and side load the one referenced here… 4k hevc media that was direct playing is now automatically transcoding to 1080p after update

any word from Plex as to when this will be fixed…

nope, as is traditional around here, I almost have to believe that the dev team doesn’t even know about it since they’ve released two beta releases since the public release, and neither of them address the issue. and as usual you get NO response from anyone on the plex team that actually knows anything about anything. this forum is a joke.

If you have not already done so, try downgrading to v6.12 of the Plex client on your Fire Stick as a matter of troubleshooting. Anything above that version has serious bugs on Fire Sticks that the Plex team seems uninterested in addressing.

Where would one find v6.12?

don’t listen to Voth24, the next thing he’ll try to push on you is jellyfin. Just install this one.

That’s what I loaded… It has some serious issues…
But is better then the current release…

If you’re on that one then you can try to disable the new player in the settings and see if that helps.

not sure what you mean…

in plex app on Amazon firestick, go to settings, then go to advanced section, then scroll to the right. “Enable New Player” change that to Off

You can try disabling the new player, but that might not work. If it doesn’t, v6.12 of the Plex client might solve your issues. You can find it here:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/plex-inc/plex/plex-6-12-0-3239-release/plex-6-12-0-3239-2-android-apk-download/

Don’t blame me for Plex’s inability to fix two year-old bugs on the Fire Stick.

We’ve already responded to this issue in another thread. It’s known and being worked on.

I have two fire stick 4k at home with v7.26.0.1578 and both work with “enable new video player”.
That is untill the “switch framerate” and/or “switch resolution” is enabled in the advanced area of the settings.

The ‘Hail Mary’ Steps are:

Disable the New Player
Check and reset the Max 264 Level from the Buggy 1.0 (if you got the bug) to at least 4.1 and beyond.
Check ‘Settings/Transcoder’ and make sure the transcoder isn’t disabled.
and If available…
Whatever state the Hardware settings are - change them to the other state
(told ya this was a Hail Mary)

If none of that works, or you can’t discover any new tricks…

SOL

… and i just updated to v7.28.0.15501. I can confirm that the Max 264 Level is buggy. I did set it to 5.2, like it was in the previous version, let the new player enabled and it is still works.

Though, all the tested filles used direct play so far.
After reducing the allowed bitrate, transcoding works as well.

What do I have to do, to actualy reproduce the problem?

update: according specs, the supported profiles are lower: Hardware accelerated up to 1080p @ 30fps or 720p @ 60fps, 20 Mbps, High Profile up to Level 4, (source)

While we wait, gathering that info couldn’t hurt.

That’s for the Gen 1 FireTV devices - like mine (the box).
I can play up to 5.1 - on the files I’ve tried it on.

The point is - 1.0 is just… wrong.
It should be set back where it was and on Gen 1 devices 4.1 is fine, probably a little higher.

I would advise ALL FireTV owners to, at this time, enable ‘Display Information’, Disable the New Player - then, at least, when you bring up the OSD you can see if a transcode is in session and the reason.

Armed with that info you may be able to change something.

ya, you cannot play anything HEVC on the device without it transcoding, period.
