I just switched from the Roku Premiere+ to the new Fire TV. Whenever the tv (Samsung 9800 series) plays HDR content, it will show on the info for the input. That being said, when I play Planet Earth II (MPEG-H/HEVC/h.265, 4K HDR) on the Roku, the TV will display that it is playing a UHD HDR video. While playing it on the new Fire TV, it only says UHD.
The settings on the FireTV it self appear to be fine, as I play Netflix and Prime HDR content with no problem, and the TV reports it as UHD HDR.
I turned on “Display Information” and Plex says while playing the video: “Unable to direct play as this media is not compatible with the device”
I am unsure if that would affect whether or not it will play in HDR, but I’m also pretty sure that the FireTV supports 265.
Another thing to note, on the Nexus Player (and I belive previous versions of the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, though I don’t have one right now to test with) you can voice search with the remote with in Plex. That feature appears to be missing on the new FireTV. If I hit the voice search button while in plex, it kicks me out and displays the FireTV results, and even if I go up to the search bar, my only option is text search.
If I had to make a guess I would gather that since this is a new device, it’s possible Plex needs a patch to support it fully? I’m just trying to figure out what is going on because if it doesn’t support HDR (with Plex) I need to return it while I still am able to.
