I’ve been slowly trying to convert to Plex’s new metadata source and I must say, it’s completely terrible. It’s so hit and miss it’s not even funny. Some stuff will “upgrade” with no problems yet some stuff (very popular TV shows specifically) will just update as “tvshow disc…track…”). It has ruined so much of my media. I convert media and upload it by season. If I don’t upload the entire season or sometimes the entire series at once, it will often not recognize the show and not sync the metadata. This new system is a complete joke and the “legacy” system worked 100% better.
You’re leaving much to guessing or interpretation.
Based on what you shared, it appears you have configured the library to use/prefer embedded metadata and those shows have some embedded title/name. Some users add that kind of stuff to their files for whatever reason – sometimes the apps used to encode the movies do that by themselves.
For a more substantial feedback you’ll need to provide some more details – e.g. the exact configuration of your tv-show library and a specific example of the naming/structure of your files.
I’ll use my Seinfeld collection for example…
Seasons 1-4 & 8-9 have all correct metadata.
Seasons 5-7 have the show descriptions, writers, directors, actors, blah blah blah all listed but NOT the show titles.
The titles are displayed as Seinfeld - Season 5 (Disc1) but again, the rest of the metadata is correct.
It’s completely hit and miss but all of my file names are correct (example: Seinfeld s05e01).
This was NOT the case on the legacy system. Everything displayed correctly now my collection of 2000 movies and 80 TV shows is about to be screwed up. It will take days to manually fix everything.
You’ve not provided anything that was asked for in order to try and help.
This is most likely caused by embedded metadata in your files. I’d assume you have the Prefer local metadata option set in your advanced settings for the TV library.

Either 1) disable that settings or 2) scrub your files and remove the embedded metadata. Once you have done one of both of those options then force a refresh of the show which should fix the problem.
What @lalala123456 and @anon5074910 just said, plus below.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/
Standard, Season-Based Shows
Most television shows have episodes organized into seasons. To name season-based shows create files with the season and episode notation sXXeXX :
- /TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17 – Optional_Info.ext
This is only an example. The important bit in the file name is the appropriate season and episode number notation s02e17 which in this example means Season 2 Episode 17 It does not matter if you use dashes, dots or just spaces.
if your files are not named appropriately, there are various tools that can quickly fix them, for example FILE BOT.
I provided everything that was asked for in order to have my problem resolved but thanks anyway.
nope.
you have provided neither the configuration of the library options, nor a specific and full path example.

That’s odd. It seems to me that all plex does is use the folder the files are in and the “SxxExx” in the filename to then head out to TheTVDB and retrieve all the info there regarding the particular episode. There should NEVER be a “Seinfeld - Season 5 (Disc1)” title retrieved from TVDB, so it most likely is a tag in the TITLE description for your file. When you tell Plex to “prefer local metadata” either as default for all libraries or on a show-by-show basis, then it can find and use this TITLE tag in the file instead.
I recommend you go to your Seinfeld season 5 episode 1, and look at the file tags inside it. If you can tell us honestly that you have looked at your file, what program you used, and the tag information contained within does NOT have the “Seinfeld - Season 5 (Disc1)” tag anywhere, we can start looking elsewhere.
