Hi i am looking at upgrading my server and am not sure which processor to go with
Currently I have i9-9900k
No gpu worth mentioning
1 ssd to do transcodeing and 2 striped nvme to hold main plex server folder and os
I am not sure if I should get the threadripper or i9
I what to be able to transcode about 15 to 20 streams while direct streaming another 10 or 15
I have 1gb up and down Internet
My current processor can handle 20 streams half transcode and direct
Are you not using the onboard iGPU for HW transcoding? I can see if you were doing all software transcodes how the 3960x would be an upgrade but it sounds like a lot of money for little gain.
Yer just looking into plex forums more. I think i maybe better getting the intel which is cheaper and getting an rtx graphics card
Does anyone know if the rtx graphics card like rtx 2070 can get a lot of streams I have always used the Intel transcode but the extreme Intel chips don’t have onboard gpu
Here are some test results. Keep in mind that the 3D part of the cards are not even utilized, just the ram and decoder/encoder. Testing was probably done on a very high end server so as to eliminate all other bottlenecks.
Geforce cards GTX/RTX are locked to 2 simultaneous transmissions of transcodings.
so you better buy Quadro P2000 or higher which will give you 27+ streams.
P5000 can do 36
you can see this video that compares cards
and you still want to buy RTX card or GTX then consider using linux to unlock the drivers which is not an easy thing to do and not recommended and i would never recommend using plex server on anything other than windows as its buggy and windows seems to be best platform to transcodes all the different formats / qualities .
you can you i9 9900k built in gpu it will give you a decent amount of streams if that wasnt enough then add Quadro p5000 or P2000 depends on your budget
