New Plex Server

Hi,

I’m planing on building a new transcoder server runing Windows 10.

As of today i’m using a Dual CPU Xeon E7540 2.0ghz with 248GB ram as my Plex server.

I’m planing to change it with a Intel NUC NUC8i7BEH2 Bean Canyon i7-8559U with 32GB of ram, due to power savings.

Will i lose much transcode power compered to my old server?

When i checked passmark tests it seems like the NUC is getting better scores than my 2x E7540, so the NUC should be better fitted for transcoding?

Is it even possible to that the NUC can be a better transcode server than my E7540? :stuck_out_tongue:

How much transcoding do you actually do?
I have gone from a desktop to vm, and the reduced the memory and cores without any problems.
Alot of my local tv/machines direct play.
When my family connect in they have never said there has been a degrading of performance, they were never informed that it was moved.

Okay, i transcode every stream due to using subtitels and i also have some friends that uses my plex.

I have a lot of big 4K files also that takes a lot of power.

The reson i use this powerful server is because i came over it for free, but it uses a lot of power and are generating a lot of heat to my server rack. so that is why i’m planing to switch it out.

But what do you thin preformace wise, will i lose a lot with the NUC?

Hello

When you say big 4k files, what size is the bitrate? my biggest is 87Mbps.
My other half regularly streams 4k films to her phone at work. I have limited the bit rate outside of my local network.
I don’t use subtitles so I can’t comment on them.
Honestly, a nuc makes a local client or server for local only connections, especially if the y direct play however external users won’t be direct playing, unless you have exception internet.

You can always make multiple servers, one for local and 1 to support your friends/family.

When it comes to transcoding, more cores is better and the nucs are lite weight low power chips.

Personally i would stay with the big one, ( unless you wish to donate it to me)
