New PMS build cpu advice/suggestions

Server Version#: latest stable
Player Version#:

I’m contemplating building a new dedicated PMS server based upon debian 12 (bookworm). it’ll be headless, as this will be the only thing it does. i’ll be installing it on bare metal and utilizing the iGPU.

i’m contemplating between a ryzen 5 7600 (6 core) or an intel i5-12xxxT (low tdp model, UHD770 iGPU).

lotta power from the amd but it would seem that the UHD770 still has a performance, feature, driver/stability/support edge for transcoding, and there will be several transcodes to remote users at any given moment… my media is all 1080P but my upload sucks (comcast cable chokes me at 20mbps upload) so they’ll be transcoded down to 720p/4mbps.

also, it seems as though intel has greater support in linux (debian)… dunno how long that’ll hold true.

what do you all think?

On Linux based systems, AMD GPUs are limited to SDR transcoding with Plex Media Server.

If you need hardware accelerated transcoding and tone mapping, use integrated Intel graphics or a Nvidia GPU.

Know you said all media is 1080p. Just thinking of future needs.

I didn’t realize that the AMD gpu’s were limited on the linux systems…

basically, you just concluded my suspicions: despite the processing power of the new ryzens, the support just isn’t as thorough in linux as it is with Intel.

Well, that answers that…

THANKS!!
