New PMS Musicbrainz Scanner is disimproving Cover behaviour

Hi,

The new Musicbrainz feature to scan the musiclibrary is really messing up with embedded covers.

(There is a long time problem with Covers:
When more that one single image is embedded in a musicfile, Plex is fetching the wrong image as a frontcover. Most users seem not to use e mbedded covers in their files, so only a few users discover discrepancies with their files and the way Plex handles them.)

Anyways,
I have posted an Issue about the new MB-scanner here: Wrong Cover via the new Plex Musicbrainz Scanner? How to fix?
Because my settings were set to prefer online AND embedded covers, I assumed, the problem is that PMS is prefering online covers before embedded ones. Thats because, the user has no control to priorize embedded before online covers. Unles the Plex-Team is willing to chime in, theres nothing I can change about it.

So I created a brand new music library with prefer embedded covers only (Album Art: Local Files Only) and guess what? The new musicbrainz scanner is fetching wrong online covers again!
That is very irritating and a huge disapointment, because now, Plex users have NO CONTROL over their own files anymore, when using the new musicscanner.

I don’t want to nag/cry/complain only, but help to find the cause and hopefully fix that odd behaviour of PMS.

The “problematic” files are the same as in my older post (Wrong Cover via the new Plex Musicbrainz Scanner? How to fix?)

I can send the support a zipped folder with that music, if it is needed, as well as a screenshot of my settings or any file from the Plex folders.
I also can zip all the logs.

Whoever can help. Please help

Has the Plex team ever been able to make Local Media Assets actually work? I’ve been struggling with this for literally years. My music collection has high-rez artwork, but PMS has always refused to use it, preferring to download incorrect or terrible-quality artwork from whatever site it happened to scrape from at the time. I’m pretty sure that the “Prefer Local Metadata” or “Local Media Assets” settings are just placebos…

…but now, we have a new chance, because the new scanner is broken too.
Maybe we can motivate the team

Hahaha my guess is that they’re too busy chasing some new BS trendy “feature” that nobody asked for and nobody will use to bother fixing actual bugs with their software.
Changelog:

  • NEW FEATURE: PLEX BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY - access Plex using your Dogecoin wallet app!
  • NEW FEATURE: SMART TOASTER FUNCTIONALITY - playback your Plex content on the 320x320 pix B&W LCD display on your favorite 2020 model year LG Smart Toaster!
  • NEW FEATURE: PlexDrone - remotely control your Hubsan drone directly through the new Plex interface, with a delay of only 10,000ms!

I’ve been hounding them for years to fix LMA and to add simple simple stuff like additional sorting fields to Plex Music, but all I ever hear back are tumbleweeds

Sounds like you are disappointed and I can understand that a lot.

But making sarcastic comments won’t help, nor it is productive or helpful in any way (to my thread), here.

So ,if you have any help or constructive comments, which might help me or the Plex Team to catch those bad little bugs they seem to foster, please continue.

Nobody (from the Plex Team) who had something to say here?

I don’t think this is a user/setting fault, but IF, I really like to know how to get around that nasty cover issue.

What can I do to address this issue, to it get fixed?

Plex has never, in my experience, prioritized using the embedded cover art. Often using the lowest quality option from the online sources instead.

Also, if you have a subfolder with the booklet, Plex will usually pick something from there. I usually see Plex using a scan of the disc or page 1 of the booklet in this case. Filename does not matter, I think it just picks the first file.

Thanks!

Thats what I experienced too ;-/ while testing with embedded art vs. art on disk.

In real life, I don’t have any image files in my music folders. Everything is embedded. Mp3tag or foobar2000 do good work here. Even Picard.

The first file found by Plex is never the one the user sees in alphabetical order, its the first file the filesystem offers. That why Plex (of course, a guess only) is showing “randomly” but mostly wrong images.

But this topic is not about chosing wrong covers from disk or embedded art, its about:

Plex does not respect the library-settings.

I configured the library to use embedded art only.

But Plex scanner is fetching online art instead of offering some (random or false, as we talk about) images from the file itsef.

Again, I have set up Album Art to Local Files Only.

If there is some other setting the user need to have activated or deactivated to use local art only, the I need the Plex Team to tell me which one it is.

Otherwise this is considered a bug.

Unfortunately, issues concerning Cover-Art are being filtered by the Forum-software, so support cannot read them :sunglasses:

We need to open more Tickets and use synonyms…

Unfortunately, this definitely doesn’t work. that was suggested to me a couple of years ago as a workaround to the totally-broken LMA settings at the time; I’ve since spent almost a full year re-working the ID3 tags to work around the limitations of Plex’s music management, and in the process, saved out all of my album artwork as separate image files. Still no dice.

With Plex pushing Tidal hard (SO hard!), I have a feeling that Plex Music support has become (was always…?) the redheaded stepchild for the Plex gang.

I think you misunderstand. My point isn’t that it works. Because Plex doesn’t pick the actual album art. It picks something else at (seemingly) random if a booklet is present somehow.

Also, my impression is that Plex seems to be fine with half-broken features as long as they can present new stuff no one asked for.

Did the Plex Team ever respond to (one of) your Posts regarding the “imperfect” way of dealing with images?

I just wonder, because my other posts were answered quite quickly, posts about covers/images/etc are not “seen”.

I haven’t really complained a lot about the issue with artwork, as that is very minor on the scale of everything that it not optimal with how Plex is dealing with the music library.

Can Plex Team at least acknowledge they are aware of this issue? I filed this 2016, there were probalby other reports even before that. I am currently loosing a lot of time as I have to manually fix a few hundred albums with wrong cover art.
