@danjames92 As stated before, it is common practice to send out press releases with inpopular news on friday afternoons in order to bury the news over the weekend and hope something else will be the talking point on monday morning.
I know I will get blasted for this, but really…and respectfully…(lol) You guys are a bunch of babies. It literally has no effect on you. What exactly is it you have to keep private in your “secret” statistics?
I will also be locking my Server down to the latest version that allows you to stop statics then looking for a new media manger… Once I find one I will request a refund for my lifetime plex pass this is a load of crap… Roll this change back or else I leave and I encourage everyone I ever suggested to use Plex to get off your platform ASAP…
oh, we have other problems in the world and PLEX and their policy isn’t one of them. this from a person who hasn’t been on Facebook for nearly 7 years.

And of course they send out the information on a friday afternoon/night. Classy Plex, classy! No one gives a crap what time it’s sent out and it makes zero difference. Quit whining about nothing and wine about the actual issue.
Dude is right. They very likely released this announcement on a Friday afternoon because that is the timeframe where people are easy to overlook or miss it (as they have the weekend before them). It absolutely adds to the notion that they are trying to sneak this by as many people as possible – i.e., it is a scummy thing to do all the way around.
but its near the end of Friday in the USA and Saturday in India… with email on your phone, you should always be aware of whats in the inbox. Like really? I just got home and boom, I looked at my phone and saw it, opened it… said “whatev” and moved on.

Time to look into emby again .
This is not acceptable. Everyone with plex-pass should be allowed to shut off data collection.

Are you kidding? That is exactly the data they want.

Good for you. You should then feel free to move on to the rest of your weekend as there is apparently nothing for you to see here. Cheers!
I too am disappointed with this. I’ll be looking to see if there are any viable alternative media servers for sure. Maybe Emby.

I have to say that I agree with this. What harm can it make to have your viewing habits being part of statistics sent to Plex? I honestly don’t get it.
I actually think of it the other way; they (Plex) prioritizes their effort based on what the majority of their users uses right. So, why wouldn’t you want to be part of this and, so to say, “cast your vote”? For this reason alone, I always had collecting turned on anyway.
I agree with the general sentiment here. I would rather pay more than have this pushed on people who have already paid. At the very least all Plex Pass members should be entitled to a refund. Class action anyone?
I’ll be giving Emby a try this weekend.
Plex will continue to collect usage statistics, such as device type, duration, bit rate, media format, resolution, and media type (music, photos, videos, etc.). We will no longer allow the option to opt out of this statistics collection.
really plex? feels like my good friend (That i grew up with lived next door for as long as i can remember) just betrayed me, emby about to get a jump in there user base

Because the point of Plex to begin with was to be able to play local files without the hassle of dealing with an online entity that collects all your data anyway, among other things. Because what I do on my own computer is my own ■■■■■■■ business and no one else’s. Because whether I’m looking at movies, tv shows, pictures, or listening to music, that’s my choice and my data. [Because “anonymized” data isn’t actually anonymized](One More Time With Feeling: 'Anonymized' User Data Not Really Anonymous | Techdirt “Because “anonymized” data isn’t actually anonymized”). Because it’s not my interest to debug problems or habits with Plex; if you want that info, ask people to allow it (and there are likely plenty of people (like you, for instance) that are willing). [Because “if you’ve got nothing to fear, you’ve got nothing to hide” is bullshit.](If You've Got Nothing To Hide, You've Actually Got Plenty To Hide | Techdirt “Because “if you’ve got nothing to fear, you’ve got nothing to hide” is bullshit.”)
There are plenty of reasons.

Ok, noted. We’re not trying to change your minds, so best of luck to you. @Qcontent, @d2freak not much more for you to add here other than threadcrapping.
This is terrible news. Seriously considering jumping ship over this.
This is very disappointing. I seriously hope this is reconsidered, especially for Plex Pass members. While I may have nothing to hide, that data comes from my server, is generated by my users, and belongs to me.
I have a policy that I do not seem to always follow and when I don’t I end up regretting my actions much of the time. That policy is to learn all I can about an issue then allow my brain to process that information for a period of time (days at least and sometimes weeks) without actively thinking about it then and only then I reexamine the issue and go through the data again and make a decision. When I follow that policy my decisions rarely result in any regrets although they are not always “right.”
In this case I read the new “policy” and the “summery” that Plex provided and I noticed this:
Before you grab your pitchfork and head to Reddit, we do NOT know what files you have stored or what you watch on your privately hosted Plex Media Servers. The only exception to this is when, and only to the extent, you use Plex with third-party services such as Sonos, Alexa, webhooks, and Last.fm. Do not panic.
Reading that I do not see any problem for me as I use none of those services at all and since they specifically say that they do not know anything about my data. If i felt that Plex was collecting what I watch or otherwise directly intruding into my data I would possibly feel differently.
That is my first blush impression. I will revisit the issue in a few days and act on what I decide at that time but I believe that, in this case, I will be making no change to my Plex usage. This change, on the surface, seems to be unimportant to me but it does deserve further examination.
To those threatening “Class action” I would say “go for it.” That would simply enrich the upholstered parasites of the legal profession but would have little impact on the world order. While some “class actions” have positive impact most are simply a money grab by the people involved.

Don’t use any of these services, so don’t want any of my or my user’s usage statistics tracked in any manner. The only reason I have a Premium Music Library is for testing, and to say I’ve been underwhelmed is an understatement.
Upcoming features and services involving third-party and ad-supported content will require Plex to collect and, in some cases, share information about the third-party content you are streaming. For clarity, third-party content is content that we deliver or stream to you that is not contained in your personal media library.
Don’t want any add supported content. I’ve already paid for a Lifetime Plex Pass. And for a few of the apps I use. As well as the apps my users have bought for themselves. What more do we need to pay for? I get my own trailers so I don’t need to stream from outside sources. If I want extras, I get those extras myself, to maintain in my own library. It’s not hard to do, just a bit of research is all that’s needed.
I don’t use Plex Cloud and feel that entire development tree a complete waste of time and resources. Plex WAS about streaming YOUR media from YOUR device to your devices. Now it’s become something akin to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
This change is a show stopper for a number of reasons, least of which is a violation of the privacy of your users by the Plex Team.
Plex is shifting away from the “Your media to Your devices” to a "Your media on our platform to your devices, so we can force you to watch what we want you to watch. Just as YouTube has 2-5 adds in a 15 minute video, I expect this change to force me and my users to watch adds to get to the media I host on my own hardware. If I wanted that, I wouldn’t have bought the hardware to stream from!
