I’m looking to upgrade my current router setup. Based in Australia, I have NBN FTTP (100/40 connection), so I only require a router, no need for a modem.
My current setup with a Linksys EA6900 has been constantly dropping internet connection recently. I use Plex a lot locally, and also many streams remotely.
I’m not sure if my current router is struggling to handle the concurrent streams.
Would anyone be able to recommend a reliable, good coverage router to use with my Plex setup?
I’ve looked at Google WiFi and Orbi, but I’ve come across a lot of people having issues with them.
How many concurrent external streams do you normally host (maximum)?
What is your total upstream bandwidth in real world conditions (use a speed test)?
How much of your content is being transcoded while streaming?
Are all of your internal devices running Wireless ac?
How many internal streams do you run concurrently?
What are the physical obstacles between your devices (walls; floors; microwaves etc)?
If you’re able, I would thoroughly recommend using a server side application like https://tautulli.com/ to help figure out how your server is being utilized.
Many things could potentially be affecting your network. Without more information it is not possible to make a recommendation or offer help/opinion.
How many concurrent external streams do you normally host (maximum)?
Generally a max of 4-5 external streams
What is your total upstream bandwidth in real world conditions (use a speed test)?
Achieve speeds of minimum 37-40mbps
How much of your content is being transcoded while streaming?
Approximately half, sometimes none depending on the user and player. Never been more than 3 concurrent transcodes
Are all of your internal devices running Wireless ac?
Internal devices are all connected directly via ethernet
How many internal streams do you run concurrently?
No more than 2 at a time
What are the physical obstacles between your devices (walls; floors; microwaves etc)?
Locally, no obstacles as it’s all hardwired
I use Tautulli and it has been a great assist. I’m thinking potentially my router has just had it. I’ve seen others complaining about loss of internet connection with the same model.
