New Server Build - Mac

I’m currently running PMS on a Mac Mini Mid-2011 with a 2.3 GHz Core i5 processor. Lately it’s been struggling once I hit 7+ streams and has crashed twice on me. I’m looking to build a new one but I want to know the best recommended CPU for that.

It will definitely still be a Mac. Let’s say probably a maximum of 10 simultaneous streams. What are some suggestions to keep transcoding smooth.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Apple was still a computer company? They wouldn’t even need to redesign the ‘current’ Mini which was last refreshed in 2014 if my recall is right. Just update the innards with fast chips and modern ports. I’m running a 2012 Mini with the 2.3Ghz i7. Love that stupid machine. Tiny, quiet and runs like a beast.

If you are stuck on the Mini, the 2012’s were far easier to upgrade than the 2014’s btw.

With the Minis yeah. Their laptops and even their iMacs are great, but that’s not a problem right now.

The problem is the processors on the newer Minis haven’t really increased in speed at all. The 2014 model comes with one that is slower than my current one. That 2012 one is working for you though? Maybe I’ll try picking up one of those.

I’m not stuck on the Mini; they just tend to be the cheapest. I’m currently looking at a 2013 iMac with a cracked screen which would be fine. It’s a 2013 Intel i3-3225@3.3 GHz which I imagine would handle it just fine.

right back when apple wasn’t a phone company. Funny plex was made specifically in mind for the Mac-Mini. Ah the old days…

Anyway as far as Mac, you dont have a ton of options.

The good news is the 2012 i7 2.3 and 2.6 have solid quad core processors in them and can handle a decent workload. You can’t get them new, so you’ll have to buy used (as far as I know, if you find otherwise please tell me).
