New User problems and needs help ripping movies

Hello, I am new to Plex and new to ripping movies. I need help understanding how to rip movies into Plex.

So I have managed getting Plex set up, have added 1000+ photo’s and successfully added 6000 music files. I have also successfully setup Plex to enable local and remote viewing and now I am trying to add my DVD and Blu-ray collection but have run into some issues I do not understand.

After some reading here in the forums I have decided to try using MakeMKV to rip my collection but have made little progress as I can not successfully play the first Blu-ray I ripped.

The blu-ray I ripped is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Using MakeMKV I ripped the movie and there didn’t appear to be any errors but when I try to play the movie in plex it will only play a few seconds. It is like it plays the first chapter then stops. When looking at the movie in Plex web viewer it shows the movie cover with a tag overlay with the number 53 in the top left corner which I assume are the number of chapters. The duration under the movie title shows 29 seconds.

So my questions,

  1. What is the correct way to rip a movie using MakeMKV.
  2. Is the 53 I am seeing the number of chapters in the movie?
  3. If the 53 is chapters, why doesn’t Plex play through the chapters?
  4. Do I need to do anything with ripped movie folder and file names or should plex just play them as they were ripped?
  5. Do I need to merge all chapters into single file, if so how?
  6. Is there a guide out there detailing all steps needed for ripping and adding movies to Plex?

I know this is alot of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it helps here are my Plex server specs: Gaming PC, Windows 10 Pro, Amd 8350 - 8 core, 8 gigs ram, Plex installed on its own 1TB seagate hard drive, Asus crosshair V formula Z MB, Sapphire R390 8 gigs ram graphics card.

No, this means that Plex is somehow of the opinion that 53 files all contain the same movie.

Say, are you ripping directly into a folder which is ‘watched’ by Plex?
If so, dont do this! It will lead to Plex seeing incomplete rips, which may look all the same to plex, so it ‘matches’ them wrong.
Always rip into a temporary folder which is not referenced in any of Plex’s libraries.
The file name of your ripped movie will be wrong anyway, so you will always need to change it before moving the file into your Plex library.

Hi OttoKerner,

I was playing around with it yesterday night and found it was a combination of what you mentioned and I was also using MakeMKV the wrong way.

First, when I started using MakeMKV I wasn’t choosing the drive icon that scans the files. I was just copying over all the movie files, which in turn created alot of extra files.

Second, I was indeed copying directly into the “Movies” folder watched by Plex.

I made a temp folder on one of my ssd’s to rip the movies into. I also would uncheck all files except for the main movie and audio in MakeMKV. After that I would end up with one movie file which I then placed in a folder with the movie name and date. I then placed that named movie folder into the Plex “Movie” Folder. Lastly I had Plex scan the folder and everything seems to be working correctly now.

Thank you the info and the link to the support page  I think for now things are sorted and we can consider this as solved.
