Plex showing only disc 1 chapters on multi disc movie

I added the extended version of the three Lord Of The Rings movies in my library and all three movies are 2 disc sets (blu-ray rip). Library is detecting the two discs of each movie correctly, adding the two discs as one movie. When i go to the Plex Player on my Nvidia Shield TV, the metadata is showing the lenght of the two discs summed up, and when disc 1 reach its end, the disc 2 starts playing automatically, but the problem is that only the chapters for disc 1 are being shown. Even when disc 2 playback starts, the chapters shown are those from disc 1. The only exception is with the second movie (Two Towers), where the chapters shown are also those from disc 1, but there are the first two chapters from disc 2 added to the list. Why not all of them?

So, i’m wondering if there is a way to force Plex to correct this issue.

First time i added all movies to the library at once, which give me the results reported on this thread. Then i deleted them from the library and tried to add first only the disc 1 for each movie, and after the chapters for all disc 1 was generated, I included all the disc 2 movies to the library, but the result was the same, no chapter for the disc 2 of the three movies were generated, with the exception of the firs two chapters of the second movie, as early related.

I’d appreciate any help!

Greetings from Brasil!

Is Plex currently recognizing the files as parts of the same movie (e.g. duration of the movie is the addition of both parts; both parts will play immediately after each other) or as different versions of that movie (blue square with number in the top-left corner of the poster)?
Can you please share the exact names?

If you have issues with multi-part movies it can be helpful to merge them into 1 file using e.g. MKVToolNix.

Plex is recognizing the files as parts of the same movie, exactly the way you described. The duration is the sum of both parts and they play one after the other, flawlessly. The only problem is actually with the chapters.

This are the names:
“01. The Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship Of The Ring - Disc 1 (2001).mkv”
“01. The Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship Of The Ring - Disc 2 (2001).mkv”
“02. The Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers - Disc 1 (2002).mkv”
“02. The Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers - Disc 2 (2002).mkv”
“03. The Lord Of The Rings - The Return Of The king - Disc 1 (2003).mkv”
“03. The Lord Of The Rings - The Return Of The king - Disc 2 (2003).mkv”

I’ll try to merge the two parts of each movie with MKVToolNix and see what happens. Thanks!

As for naming… for the movies to be recognized as different parts of the same movie, Plex will expect the files to be named like this:

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)-disc1.mkv
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)-disc2.mkv

The -discX part should be the very last section of the file name and there should be no additional spaces.

Thanks Tom! I understand that there is a recommendation for naming files, but apparently Plex was already recognizing my files as one movie correctly, even the names of the files been different from the recomendation.

But I ended up merging both discs of each movie with MKVTools and now Plex is showing all chapters.

Thanks again! And hope I had not make a mess with the language, cause English is not my native language.

FWIW, there was an issue where only chapters for the one of the parts was imported. This has been corrected in the upcoming server version 1.15.2.
