I have an older qnap, but it’s been working fine with Plex. A while back they stopped updating Plex for it. Still it worked fine on my Xbox one so no problem. But since the last Xbox update it’s says I need Plex 1.5.1 on my server.
Which of course I can’t get. Has anyone else been affected by this? It pretty much kills Plex for me, so do I just cancel my payments to them?
Im pretty pissed off about this to be honest. I watch Plex all the time. Have hours and hours of films and to shows on there.
If you’re running an older QNAP that uses an ARMv5 processor, for instance, then you’re correct that we’re unable to support that platform for newer Plex Media Server releases. We do occasionally have to make changes to the minimum supported requirements for operating systems or hardware. It simply isn’t always possible to continue supporting older systems that don’t have the same capabilities as newer operating systems or newer hardware.
Similarly, we sometimes have to increase the minimum supported Plex Media Server version for client apps because they require features or capabilities that older server versions don’t offer. That was the case with our new Xbox One app: it requires features that server versions earlier than v1.5.1 simply don’t support, I’m afraid.
I certainly understand that it’s not what you want to hear, but it simply isn’t possible for us to continue supporting either older hardware/OSs or older server versions indefinitely. Aside from just compatibility issues, being stuck on an old server version also means that you don’t have access to newer features or things like security fixes.
If you have another (Win/Mac/Linux) computer, you can run a current version of Plex Media Server on it and then point to the content stored on your NAS. That would give you sort of the best of both worlds: the storage size and security of a NAS with a more powerful server, capable of running current versions of our server. Alternatively, you could run Plex Media Server on an NVIDIA SHIELD device, pointed to the content on your NAS. That’s a pretty inexpensive solution, supports transcoding (which your existing install/NAS does not), and even has the advantage that you can hook it up to your TV and use the Android TV Plex app (which is one of the most capable apps available when running on NVIDIA SHIELD).
