New Xbox One App is UNUSABLE

Ok, I feel bad for this, but this new UI is UNUSABLE. Here is a screenshot followed by issues:

Issue 1: what is the user currently selected on? A movie? home? search? Unwatched? where is the user’s cursor highlight? It is pure guess work trying to figure out where I am! this is totally unusable. (correct answer, btw, would be “search”)

Issue 2: Whats with all the black being used? it’s like stuck in a horrible high contrast mode. the ‘unwatched’ black triangles are too subtle to see now. and all the text is written on black solid backgrounds which makes everything look super ugly.

Issue 3: Everything is super sluggish.

Issue 4: Sorting of my libraries (on the top bar) is bizarre - basically, it’s unsorted far as I can tell.

Issue 5: the UX is just confusing - horribly so.

Is there a way I can go back to the previous xbox one app version? otherwise, I will abandon Plex most likely.

Thanks.

Hi there. That does indeed look pretty funky, it is not supposed to look like that. Do you always see the library page like that or was that a one time glitch? If you can reproduce it we would love to know. Libraries are sorted in the library picker by most recently accessed, so over time your most used libraries should appear first.

So far it’s been appearing always like this. I did a hard reboot of my xbox one as well (it’s an original, not an S).

I can also try with removing the power cord just to see if that helps.

For reference, the Xbox One HDMI is sent to an Onkyo TX-NR646, whose HDMI out is sent to an LG OLED65B7A.

Ok I figured it out

The xbox itself somehow got placed into high contrast mode. Not sure how, maybe when the new dashboard update was applied I guess.

Turning off high contrast mode, and the Plex app looks much better.

So, I would say you have some issues for people who may run the app in high contrast mode.

Very odd. Is it only that library, or does it happen to all your other libraries?

It was everything, all the UX was affected regardless of library etc.

Could you try uninstalling and reinstalling the app? If that does not work would you mind temporarily sharing an affected library with me so I can pin down the issue on my end?

Yes I can try uninstalling and reinstalling the plex app sometime tuesday. I’ll update you on what happens.

Have you tried setting xbox into high-contrast mode, and does it show similar results or not? I’m better high-contrast mode is altering the colors Plex is trying to use in an unexpected way. (Btw, I’m a software engineer so I can see the Plex code would probably want to check for high contrast and pick colors accordingly, if it isn’t yet doing that)

So uninstall/reinstall doesn’t fix anything.

But I’ve determined that turning on the high contrast (dark theme) in the xbox one settings under “ease of access” seems to cause the issue.

@smarison Thanks for the report. We’re tracking this internally now.
