I received the new Xbox experience last night as well. I’m noticing my videos are choppy during playback…
I was thinking of turning the Direct Play back off and seeing if it has something to do with the native MKV support on the XBOX One and the update.
*UPDATE: I just tested the same video with Direct Play disabled on the Xbox One. When transcoding the MKV file playback is fine without stuttering. @bbuckles76 could you try the same and report back the results?
Hmm, my library is 95% mkv and I’ve had no issues at all. Glad it got you going again, would be interesting to see a sample that recreates the issue though as well as the xml info on the file.
Edit: Just tried an mkv I encoded from a bluray via handbrake with ac3 audio. It was direct playing with no issues. Were you doing a raw bluray rip from makemkv possibly? That would be a different video codec and I unfortunately don’t have any of those on my server.
Update… Some videos are still choppy. I haven’t had time to experiment with different settings yet though, but some videos still are running into issues.
I haven’t accepted the new dashboard yet, but I’ve been experiencing choppy/stuttering videos as well, even with mp4’s. It started happening about the same time the Xbox One got a small (non preview) update. The stuttering that I’ve seen has been relatively minor…maybe 2-3 times during a 30 minute video it’ll stutter. Other than that it’s been ok, but definitely not as stable since the small update.
The ~400 MB update pushed at 6pm today (Oct 5) didn’t fix this issue. It did, however fix a bunch of other critical Xbox things (like wifi!), so I’m sure they’ll get to it.
This issue is now listed in the known bugs section in the preview dashboard app.
Make sure to hit “+1 I also have this problem” so Microsoft sees many people are suffering and make this a priority
@mike4001 Thanks for the tip. Any chance this also applies to people in the preview program, but not using the new dashboard yet? As of 2 weeks ago, Plex on Xbox One became highly unstable for me and I don’t even have the new dashboard installed. Not only are videos freezing/pausing on me, but the app freezes too and I have to quit Plex completely and restart. It happens at least once a day, but really it’s just about every time I turn on the Xbox and use Plex.
I received a small update this morning on my xbox (about 400mb) . Set it to download/install and had to leave for work. I’ll test when I get home to see if they’ve fixed the issue.
Update: Nope this didn’t fix it. I’m guessing this is the same update linuxdave mentioned.
New dashboard… Direct Play Enabled - videos choppy and unplayable (tested a few mkv’s).
Disable Direct Play… it behaves, but as that means it’s transcoding, I guess it means my NAS will explode in a fiery ball of sadness as soon as I try and watch anything too demanding for the transcode
Disabling direct play does improve playback and the stuttering has gone away. Hard to be completely sure but in panning shots there seems to be something I can only describe as a trembling.
Strangely the play and pause buttons on my Harmony have stopped working in Plex since the update… May be able to fix it, just haven’t gotten round to trying yet, but wonder if they have changed the IR code in some way?

I noticed that on the YouTube app so they’ve definitely changed something
