I’ve installed it to handle my rapidly growing collection of Doctor Who related media (and other stuff) - I am tearing my hair out trying to work out how to get it to see all the video/media files have for any given Doctor Who story.
For some stories, I have up to four different versions of each episode (with multiple soundtrack options and subtitle options) plus loads and loads of extras many of which have never been on TV, and in some cases, they are things I’ve edited together myself (Eg Where I have combined non-DVD commentaries with the pictures they go alongside).
The following shows an example of the some of the media associated with just one story (It doesn’t show the MP3 audio-only versions)
How do I handle all this in plex? I don’t expect plex to be able to download metadata for everything because most of it will never be in the TVDB. I just want to be able to see my files and stream them out.
I have tried installing TV local extras plugin by @contrary_cat but when I go to settings/manage/plugins it doesn’t appear to be there - even though I can select it under settings agents.
I am fairly sure that the naming conventions I have adopted above aren’t right - I’ve tried lots of different varients all to no avail.
I’d suggest naming them as Doctor Who (1963) and Doctor Who (2005) to help with distinguishing them. What is it you’re trying to be able to see in the apps?
Thanks for the reply @DaveBinM - it has made a minor difference - the thumbnail chosen for the first episode in the story is now in B&W!! And in folder view I can still only see 6 files but they are now called Episodes 29 through 34 instead of dates.
@DaveBinM
What I want to be able to do is see the full list of videos as shown in the first screen shot. At the moment I can only see 6 out of the 30 videos that are in that folder.
I fear you may struggle with multiple versions of the same episode as Plex will stack them, hence those that have numbers in the top left.
(You can select a version when starting playback, but nothing useful is displayed in the selection window, so it is hard to know which is which)
I am not familiar with that plugin, and it may do want you want but I don’t know. Plugins are not really supported anymore, although at least some metadata agents still work. Just not sure how you use that one.
For things that are not episodes, you could put those in a specials folder.
If they are not in the TVDB as specials, then you should number them higher than those listed in the TVDB. (I think there are about 60 specials so far) So maybe number yours from 100 e.g.
Doctor Who - s00e100 - My Custom Special 1.ext
Doctor Who - s00e101 - My Custom Special 2.ext
You would need to manually edit your custom specials, as they will just display as Episode 100 etc
There is also a current issue with Plex and the TVDB, so if you want metadata, you will need to fix match for the show and enter the TVDB ID (76107) (see my post here)
The above is what I did for doctor who. Use 1xx for extended / alternative version, 2xx for colour version, 3xx etc for special features. You’ll need to manually name the custom episodes
