Is there a way to get Plex Server to properly recognize Doctor Who?

The Classic Doctor who is Season 1 to Season 26… New Doctor Who Series 1 to current. I have a mix of both, but the year 2005 identifier for the “new” series gets jumbled into the 1963 identifier for the “classic” series. It’s a mess. I’ve sort of worked around it by just busting the new into season 27 - current… but it’s not a proper fix (no meta data will download).

Is it possible to fix this? If so, how? Thanks!

Same issue here - workaround is separate libraries for Doctor Who (classic) and Doctor Who (2005).

doh, okay, thank you

There are 3 separate listings for ‘Doctor Who’ at TVDB:

Doctor Who
Doctor Who (2005)
Doctor Who (2009)

Successful Doctor Who file namers will use the appropriate naming indicated at TVDB.

Yes, but Plex does not recognise them correctly when there are embedded folders eg. \Dr Who\Doctor Who (2005)\Season 9

I’m not surprised:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

Doctor Who: http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=76107
Doctor Who (2005): http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=78804&lid=7
Doctor Who (2009): http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=112671&lid=7

A TV Show Library/
…Doctor Who/
…Season 01/
…Doctor Who - S01E01 - Classic Who 1.XXX
…Doctor Who (2005)/
…Season 01/
…Doctor Who (2005)- S01E01 - 2005 Who 1.XXX
…Doctor Who (2009)/
…Season 01/
…Doctor Who (2009)- S01E01 - 2009 Who 1.XXX

That works perfectly here at my house because:

  1. it’s in compliance with Plex Guidelines for Media Preparation
    and
  2. they’re named and structured exactly as Plex and TVDB expect to find them

There are other various specials and iterations of Who - found by using the search bar on the page at:
http://thetvdb.com/
Where one can extrapolate the naming - or one can use FileBot (link in my signature) that will very likely pre-match and re-name them all instantly.

That’s pretty much all I need to know - and probably what you need to know as well.

I am happy that works for you. The info I gave as a workaround for the OP works for me.

Plex is not the only media software that I use, so I prefer to adapt Plex to meet the needs of my library, not the other way round.

As has been demonstrated ad nauseum Plex Naming Standards are pretty much standard across just about everything else, but it could be true that ‘what works’ in something else won’t work in Plex, so the obvious choice here would be:

Name for Plex - and it’s all flowers and kittens from there.

For me, I have MediaPortal 1 installed on multiple client machines that would all need re-configuring if I re-organised my library. Also, I want to keep Dr Who media separate on my server to other TV shows. So, perhaps it is good to be accepting that different users have different needs. My workaround is perfectly acceptable to me, maybe other users would find that also, like the OP.

Wondering about a quick solution here. This is my current naming convention and I have a bulk rename utility. My head hurts and some help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, that won’t work.

  1. your file names are not in compliance with Plex Naming Standards for TV Shows.
  2. your naming isn’t in compliance with TBDB’s method of listing Doctor Who Episodes
  3. you can get away with #2, but #1 MUST be in compliance. Period.

Here is a perfect example of both Plex and TVDB compliance, starting at Season 2:

A TV Show Library/
…Doctor Who/
…Season 02/
…Doctor Who - S02E01 - Planet of Giants (1).mkv
…Doctor Who - S02E02 - Dangerous Journey (2),mkv

Now, let’s stay in compliance with Plex and call the episodes what you want:

A TV Show Library/
…Doctor Who/
…Season 02/
…Doctor Who - S02E01 - Planet of Giants (Planet of Giants).mkv
…Doctor Who - S02E02 - Planet of Giants (Dangerous Journey),mkv

You can call the episodes whatever you want. Everything after ‘S02E01 -’ is ignored by Plex. You MUST however be in compliance with: ‘Doctor Who - S02E01 -’ (the hyphens can be nixed, but the guideline below shows them in. Filebot puts them in when it names files perfectly for Plex, so I’m showing them in 'cause they’re in over here and I’m the guy with no errors in his log file. Read into that whatever you like, but I can see that Bulk Rename is at least getting the Show Name and Hyphens right, but has failed miserably at everything else. Try FileBot instead (link in my signature).

Here’s the layout at TVDB - and let’s hope TVDB stays up long enough for you to see it:
http://thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=76107&seasonid=9677&lid=7

Here’s the Plex Naming Guide for TV Shows:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

Plex has this uncanny and really annoying ability to hang on to a bogus bundle as if it’s life depended on it. You now have a bogus Doctor Who bundle and we’re going to have to fake Plex out in order to get a new bundle.

The Plex Dance®

  1. remove the entire show from the library - yes, that’s remove. Move it outside the library so Plex can’t see it.
  2. update library
  3. clean bundles
  4. empty trash
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— update library, clean bundles, empty trash
  5. fix names and structure - check, double check, triple check - or Plex will again get a bogus bundle in it’s teeth.
  6. replace show into library
  7. update library

Failure to follow these exact steps in this exact order will mean you’ll likely have to do again and next time you’ll have to follow the instructions.

Any questions?

I’ve ripped the DVDS of Doctor Who - Classic 63-89

I have Stories and I have Extras. What I want to do is have the Episodes of each story and the DVD extras. Do I make a Playlist for each seperate Story and Add it like that - and if so - How do I name the extras as they of course won’t appear on the TVDB archives?

Thanks
Frank

I am in a similar situation, but you cant name the files like that if you want Plex to get the metadata from thetvdb. As for the DVD extras, i just put them in folders based on series and put them in the “Home Videos” section of my plex library, just as i have done with other series (like Star Trek). That way they are still viewable in Plex, but it doesn’t try and scrape any metadata for them.

As usual, just listen to @JuiceWSA. In all the years I’ve been using Plex, any time I’ve had an issue; if it was because of naming. . . he’s been right every stinking time. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

As far as the extras go; you make a folder in your Doctor Who show folder and name it Specials or Season 00. Check with the TVDB for episode naming/numbering and Plex will pick them up no problem.

I did my Doctor Who collection one at a time as I was learning how to rip and name, etc. . . so it took me over three years, I could have saved a ton of time with filebot for naning the shows; but I still had to learn proper structure to put them in Plex.

THIS! Adding (Classic) to the original series folder fixed it for me. THANKS!

New Plex user, trying to wrap my head around this.

Specifically specials. More specifically the most recent one from Jan 2019. I can’t figure out what to rename that to in order to get Plex to properly recognize it. Some help plz?

https://www.thetvdb.com/series/doctor-who-2005/episodes/6904705

Same as proposed by the posts above
Naming for the new series should be

TV Shows
  > Doctor Who (2005)
    > Season 01
      > Doctor Who (2005) - s01e01.ext
      > Doctor Who (2005) - s01e02 - The End of the World.ext
      > ...

with ext being the respective file extension (e.g. mkv, mp4…) – the episode title in the file name is optional and will be completely ignored by Plex!

Naming for your particular special…

TV Shows
  > Doctor Who (2005)
    > Season 00
      > Doctor Who (2005) - s00e156.ext

alternative to Season 00 you can also name the specials folder Specials.

That part I figured out. After doing it my own way for over a decade, this feels weird to me.

However, this bit…

That’s what I wasn’t knowing. Didn’t realize you could do s00e156 - I wasn’t even guessing in that area. That did work, tho. Tkx for the tip.

You can find this (and more) in the Media Preparation section of the support articles. The details on naming tv specials are e.g. described here:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220707-naming-tv-show-specials/

I’m a quick study - I got most of the regular Doctor Who stuff set up. But that specific special was giving me fits. I have more to read obviously.

Now to try some of the William Hartnell Doctor Who episodes that had their own individual titles. I’ll get there. Tkx for the pointers.
