I have DVDs of Doctor Who which I want to add to my Plex Server on Synology, I am faced with a dilemma as there has been two separate series runs 1963-1989 and then 2005-present. How do I add these so that they don’t get cross filed? Especially since both runs start with a Season 1 (according to IMDB), even though they are still in sequence.
How would I add them and what would be the proper naming convention that I should use?
Right now, I am able to get the 1963 run to display on Plex server, however I cannot get the newer run to appear. How can I do this?
You have the two show folders OK, but Season Folders are: Season 01, Season 01, etc. <—forget what you have - that won’t work.
Then comes the file naming. The standard and correct advice is to stop doing whatever you are trying to do and follow TVDB - To The Letter - while following this guide - To The Letter:
Also:
You’re probably going to have to Fix Match - Plex fails miserably when trying to identify makes and remakes and remakes. <—but do set the Shows/Seasons/Episodes correctly before you do that.
Plex matched the files. No manual intervention required.
I do not really have the shows. I copied/renamed a mkv file to match the shows, then dragged them into a TV library. Plex scanned the files and pulled in the metadata.
That’s what I would have done, but Filebot’s cache kept wanting to name my test files ‘Andromeda Strain’, and wasn’t in the mood to hand edit them…lol
( I may do tho - just to see if Plex fumbles 'em)
In that case you look through those 156 episodes to see if you can find yours and if you can’t you start ‘creating’ episodes - start at S00E300, so you’ll have room to spare as more episodes come along at TVDB. There won’t be a match, of course, but you can hand edit as required.
Shows sometimes air “specials” or other content that isn’t part of the standard season. “Specials” episodes are always part of season zero (i.e. season number “00”) and should be placed inside a folder named either Season 00 or Specials .
Where you specify the correct episode numbers. If you’re unsure whether a particular episode is a Special or not, check the episode on TheTVDB and name it as you see it there.
If an “episode” you have doesn’t appear in TheTVDB (e.g. DVD Specials or goof reel), place this content in the Season 00 or Specials folder named using s00eYY using a false “YY” number (e.g.: Heroes s00e99). The show will be available to play in a Plex App but won’t have any special metadata gathered, such as a summary.
The reason you want to try to find your episode in that magnum list (apart from not having to hand edit it) is that if you do, it’ll acquire the air date - and show up in On Deck at just the right moment. Most DVD extras wouldn’t have aired as ‘Specials’, but some might. It’s worth a look anyway.
I am talking about special featurettes such as behind the scenes, bloopers, etc… not. Special Episodes or one-off episodes (like UK Christmas Specials for a series)
For example I have for. an episode: deleted scenes and behind the scenes documentary on the making of the episode. This is what I want to add into my Plex.
There’s various workarounds to deal with what you’re looking for… however Plex isn’t supporting local media assets / extras for tv shows, seasons and episodes the way it does for movies.
There’s a highly popular feature suggestion to which you can add your voice/vote:
Common workaround is adding those files as separate episodes to your given season (or specials) beyond the „natural“ number of episodes… you can e.g. start those extras by adding 100 to the episode number to which the file belongs. You will then have to manually edit that file‘s metadata (title, description, poster, release date…). Keep in mind this will not smoothly fit into the basic season order and those extras might be popping up in your play next queue.
