Newbie: Music Files

My music collection is so big I have to add one artist at a time with selecting folders. Most of the artists I choose, not even half of the music is there from that artist. Has this happened to anyone? Can someone help me?

When you say “add one artist at a time,” do you mean adding each individual artist’s folder in the Edit Library page, like this?

If so, don’t do that. Plex will not do well, and it’s really hard to maintain.
Your library should point to a “parent” folder, like “Music,” for example, and then all your artist folders should be under Music.

You should go through the article I linked below. It has good information about how your files should be organized so Plex can correctly identify them.

I had added the main music folder with all artists in it but it took forever to sync. It was as if it cloned every music files and my hard drive was filling up fast. I do have plenty of space.

The only thing I can think of where Plex might be using large amounts of disk space is the Sonic Analysis feature. It should release that space when it’s done.

Sonic Analysis can take days on a large library. If it’s set to “as a scheduled task and when media is added,” it’s going to monopolize your system for days, because, when you’re building a new library, everything you add is triggering Sonic Analysis immediately. You might want to disable it, or set it to “as a scheduled task,” until your library is built.

I just disabled it for now. I know my music files are fine. If I do add it back, should I set it as a scheduled task? If so will it scan the whole library a lot faster?

I did notice that the amount of space was in C and plex media and then cache. I’m not sure what is stored in there.

It won’t scan faster, but it will only scan during the time period set for Scheduled Tasks. I think the default is something like 1 AM to 5 AM.

Disable not only the sonic analysis but also the loudness analysis.
Both can be re-enabled later and then performed during maintenance hours.

Keep in mind that the Plex data folder will grow considerably, the more items you add to your collection.
If you already have a shortage of free space on the default hard drive volume (i.e. C: on Windows), consider relocating it to a larger drive. (No, this is not done during the installation).

This one is helping out a lot. Thanks for the info. Should I re-enable it after the initial scan? Can I clean out the plex data folder after it scans?

The temp folders should get cleaned out automatically after the current album has been processed.
If it isn’t, I’d look for things which are potentially interfering here. Like over-zealous anti virus software which locks access to the temporary wav files, so they can’t get deleted by Plex anymore.
I’ve also observed Microsoft’s cloud sync software syncing every temp file during operation – for whatever reason. Keep an eye on that one.

Something is taking up a lot of room. The temp I don’t think was cleared out.

Which folders can I delete?
