What is a better way of adding my music to Plex?

Hello,

I’m not quite sure what I’m hoping for - I might want to set up a music collection. I’d like to do a better job adding my music to Plex.

Currently if I go to my classical music I let it dump it into this but it isn’t really organized in any way. Before I add my other genres, I thought I’d focus on getting this one right.

THanks.

I strongly recommend following the organization described in the article below.
The first, most obvious change you’ll need to make is to organize the files into the folder structure described. Having all your files in a flat folder will cause nothing but trouble in Plex.

I have seen several people recommend an app called Filebot to help reorganize files. I have no experience with it myself, but you might look into it to see if it will make things easier.

As @beckfield said, if you want any sense of usefulness out of Plex, you’ll have to go through the process of making a separate folder (the album title) for every track to be placed in.

Example:

Music
Stress Busters
01 - Canon.mp3

The hard part is identifying the album all of your tracks came from, and the track position on that album. Filbot is an excellent tool but there will still be a lot of work involved because, especially with classical music, any given track could be on on of 20 different compilation albums.

If you go through that process (and many people do), you’ll have a fantastic experience with Plex. But the downside of that is now you’ve made your library on the HD difficult to manage by human hands. If for whatever reason you want to copy a selection of your favorite tracks to a flash drive for listening outside of Plex, you will have to spend much more time doing so.

I ended up going with a different free option to stream my personal collection, but only because as a former DJ, I have 10’s of thousands of singles as opposed to a ton of full albums, so I never thought it was worth the time investment to make it Plex Friendly. Once set up, though, the interface with Plex is very nice.

You can DM me if you’d like a few suggestions of free or near-free alternatives. (And I’m not referring to Google/Amazon products which are phasing out that ability).

As long as the album title is still stored inside your files as a meta tag, you can achieve this with the free mp3tag
(and many other programs like it)
