Finally got my Plex to connect to my server and have been enjoying the app for music. I’m also able to select and listen to podcasts, but when I click on news tab under online sources, though I see a lot of news clips, when clicked on, they do not load. I’m on a mac using the desktop player. No VPN is on. (I wanted to know also, I hear that people are watching tv stations like CNN and saw some post comparing it to having cable stations. Is that something only available w/ a plex pass? Are there limitations/blocks if watching from Germany?)
While I’m not entirely an expert, I can at least partially help you until someone comes through with a more comprehensive answer.
For your News, I have no idea since I don’t use that feature.
For the “CNN” or “Cable Stations” (And someone can correct me here if I am wrong), Plex allows you to connect a TV Tuner to your computer which allows plex to give you live tv while on your home wifi network, and the ability to record shows with a built in DVR from Plex. This is something only available to Plex Pass users. I know it works with an Antenna for OTA Broadcast Television, as that is what I am using it for. I have no idea if it works for Cable TV, as I don’t have a Cable TV tuner, nor do I have Cable TV in my home.
Edit: Forgot to mention, the recorded shows are available from outside the network, but the live tv streaming can only be viewed while on the home network
Not true. You can watch live TV from remote just fine. If your server is powerful enough to do the transcoding, which is practically inevitable with live TV.
Thanks! Good to know! I was told by another person in this forum it was not able to do that. Which is why I said I was no expert. I have not attempted from outside the network, as it’s a recent addition, and I haven’t left the house since I got it all set up (yesterday).
thanks Jason and Otto, so then I would need a Plex Pass to view TV stations? I’m in Germany and want to watch news and other programs. Is there a comprehensive list of what stations I can get, and are there any blocks or rights issues that would prevent me from watching American TV? I could use a VPN possibly, but even if that works, would prob. slow me down. don’t need to watch away from home, just on my own wifi. I do get random news clips in the online sources section, but can’t really watch tv per se. Thanks for the advice.
You can only get those stations which are available over-the-air or cable (unencrypted!) in your server location. You cannot watch any foreign stations if they are not receivable in your area.
In Germany, you also need a beefy server CPU which can transcode HEVC/H.265 video in realtime, due to the DVB-T2 standard in use in Germany.
good to know, thanks!
