which is better the nighthawk x 10 vs nvidia shield for my plex media server
I think you still need a plex server … it is not running on the router itself… The Nighthawk is just hosting you media file for network distribution/transfer to plex clients
The Nighthawk can run Plex, but it’s not ideal. Most routers don’t have the juice to transcode if they have to.
If you’re looking at the Shield, lots of people run PMS on the Pro version and are quite happy with it.

Interesting, I guess it all depends if it can direct play most of your library then…
Chris I have both the X10 Router and the Nvidia Shield…not sure which one to use?
So would you recommend the Shield instead of the Nighthawk? I’m just starting to setup my Plex server…so i’m a newbie and would appreciate all the help I can get.
For best results, you should always aim for Direct Play on underpowered systems if you can.
I get nervous when it comes to running PMS on NAS systems or Routers unless they’re running a higher level CPU. The underpowered systems advertise that they can run Plex, and while this is true… it often causes headaches for those that don’t understand how taxing transcoding can get.
Chris I don’t have the Pro Version of the Shield, but a bought a 8 Terrabyte external drive to have additional storage space.
Should I format it as internal or external storage?
your external drive is going to be an external storage to your shield… here is more information on increasing internal storage to your shield:

So If I set up the Shield as the PMS then I still would need a PC to get my content correct?
And would I transfer my content from my Laptop over the network using \readyshare to see the Shield?
Chris
If I user the Shieldas my PMS then I would have to use my laptop as the interface between the two correct?
Any device that can access Plex.tv can be used for admin purposes.
