Hi Elan (and others)
Have you considered doing nightly builds (like VLC and others have)?
I think it helps peak interest for the project as there’s always something new to download and try out and it seems like the project is moving forward all the time.
Regards
Martin
I don’t necessarily care about nightly builds, but knowing what features we can expect in a coming build … that’d be nice.
I never like the whole “Apple Secrecy” stuff. But, as long as the software continues to rock … I’m good.
I am new on these forums, but correct me if I am wrong...
Nightly Builds may not be possible, or if they are, not very productive with the way that plex is being developed.
It was decided to use git for version control. git allows each user to have their own fork/branch. That means each developer will have their own build. When someone makes progress in one area, or adds a new feature, Elan or any other developer can clone the other developer's branch or part of it.
That make's it difficult to make a nightly build, because everyone's build may be slightly different. I assume that Elan makes the call when a new release will be built and posted.
If you wish to have a nightly build (that's even if there were any changes made), you can do so by following the instructions posted on the main page to compile Plex on your own. I would do so only if you are knowledgeable with the terminal and Xcode.
The problem I have with nightly builds is that it makes quality control harder, as it greatly increases the number of builds out “in the wild” that people can report bugs for.
WolfieNuke is also correct that the code for a single release exists in a number of different cloned repositories which I pull into the single release repository before a release.
We are focusing primarily on stability for the 0.5 releases. This is the “triage” period where we’re trying to provide a solid media center, before we go adding new and cool features.
No matter how much I’d like nighty builds to my even more of my fix on I don’t see a reason. Elan has been pushing through releases at a fast rate and as he’s said the builds would make it much harder to fix issues with people testing different builds. Besides it leaves me with more time to play instead of testing out a new version every night.
=)
