No Activity Function For Shared Users Only Admin

Server Version#: Version 1.13.9.5416
Player Version#: Web Client Version 3.69.1

I have recently acquired a Terramaster F2-220 which has the ability to install the Plex Media Server on it.

I had a previous setup using the Windows Plex Media Server and have since moved everything over to the NAS with its own server configured the same as I had previously. The Windows Plex Server did not have this issue.

For some reason, only my account shows any activity under the activity icon (Now Playing). I can see the activity in both the local connection (192.168.x.x:32400) and also the https://app.plex.tv/desktop site.
I have tested streaming locally from my computer and also remotely from another WAN using both the web player and iOS version of the plex player and all show my account playing correctly under the Activity/Now Playing icon.

The issue I have is I have shared my server with some family and whenever they stream I do not see any activity/Now Playing either locally or through https://app.plex.tv/desktop.

As a side note, I have also setup Tautulli which reacts in the same way. It logs all the data from my own account but not for anyone else.

As a test, I created a new account and have shared the server to it but no matter if I am streaming something on my local network or remotely using the test account I cannot see any activity from my admin account or Tautulli.

I have opened all the ports mentioned in the Plex Support pages (although have not had to do this before) but this has made no difference. I have also tried setting up a manual connection on the server for external access but no difference there either.

One thing I have noticed, my NAS has a configuration where it redirects connections from port 443 to port 5443 which is its inbuilt administration web interface (it also redirects port 80 to 8181). I have requested support from the Vendor to find out the best way to remove this redirection but they are slow to respond. I was wondering if the Activity function may be using 443 to provide information for Now Playing on the server but possibly not for the admin account.

Another strange oddity is that I can only access the “select player” icon when browsing through the local network connection (192.168.x.x:32400) and not through the https://app.plex.tv/desktop site, it is simply not selectable. I’m sure I could do this before.

Strangely I can see the activity in the Plex Server Logs for both accounts.

Any ideas at all will be greatly appreciated. Until I get the port redirections removed I cannot think of anything else that I can test for now.

If you are logged in as the Admin, you should see everything that is being played from your server, including your friends. I haven’t tested the Terramaster so I’m not sure if there is a limitation there. Can you provide the entire log file after accessing the Now Playing page while someone is playing something?

Plex Media Server Log.txt (204.8 KB)

3 Devices used in this test
Remote Laptop - Local Computer - NAS

Logged into the Remote Laptop on another network using the test account (using Plex Web Player).

Logged into the Local Computer to access the NAS Plex Web Player using the admin account (NAS has no native browser of course)

Started stream from Remote Laptop

Checked the activity option at the top of the Plex Web interface (Local Computer/NAS)
No ‘Now Playing’ option is present. If I mouse over the icon it just says no server activity.

Closed the stream on the Remote Laptop.

I have no idea if this is relevant but I did notice this.

Can you PM me the full uncensored version of that log?

The error you found are not related to the playback sessions not showing up. However, I do see this when you called up the Now Playing page.

Nov 20, 2018 09:46:17.326 [0x7f18a9bff700] DEBUG - Completed: [WANIPADDRESS:54688] 401 GET /status/sessions (11 live) TLS GZIP 1ms 411 bytes (pipelined: 5)

That’s saying that the Web app you called up Now Playing from doesn’t have the permission to see all the streaming sessions, which is why they don’t show up. I don’t know what it’s doing that, which is why I need the full logs.

So I tried installing the Windows Plex Server again to see what happens and everything works correctly.

Then to test further I disabled the Terramaster Plex Server App and installed the Docker version. The Docker version works correctly so I can only presume that the NAS implementation is flawed in some way.

I’m happy using the Docker version to be honest, it seems to be more responsive and there isn’t much difference in how I want to use the Plex Server.
