Any files sent to the device as Direct Play/Stream will not play audio if the audio codec is EAC3. This actually happens on both the Apple TV 4K and iPhone 8 Plus running iOS 11. The behavior is the same whether it’s mp4 or mkv, and it makes no difference if I have the ATV 4K set to “best quality available” or “dolby digital 5.1”.
The interesting thing is on the ATV 4K if I go to Settings for the individual file (not the app settings) and select Convert Automatically the sound plays correctly, then if I look at the server under Now Playing it says: Transcoding EAC3 to EAC3. I have to do this for any file with an EAC3 track.
I don’t know if this is a Plex issue or an ATV 4K issue, or even user error somehow in creating the audio track because the transcoder seems to do some sort of voodoo converting the original EAC3 to a transcoded EAC3 and it plays fine. Of course, ideally I’d rather use Direct Play than transcode. Any ideas what’s happening here?
