Hello, everyone!
I’m new to Plex and have been exploring it as I’m considering fully migrating from another media server. However, I’ve noticed something confusing and wanted to ask for clarification.
Every file with an EAC3 audio track plays via direct playback on my device when using another media server (Emby). However, with Plex, all these same files on the same device get transcoded from EAC3 to AAC instead of playing directly.
I’d like to understand why this happens. Is there a specific setting or compatibility issue I might be missing? I really like Plex, but this is something that’s been holding me back from fully transitioning.
So, I enabled this option, but it’s still transcoding from EAC3 to AAC. However, I think I found the problem: my Google TV Stick doesn’t support the EAC3 codec, even though Emby can play it without issues. Do you think buying a Fire TV 4K would solve my problem??
I have an Amazon FireStick 4K Max Gen 2 connected to a Denon receiver.
AC3, EAC3 including Atmos, and TrueHD including Atmos all direct play and passthrough to the Denon. Note that EAC3 7.1 is passed as EAC3 5.1. Not sure if the two channels are dropped or mixed into the 5.1 stream.
All DTS formats direct play, but only the core DTS 5.1 is passed. Any -HD MA or :X information is discarded.
As long as your audio equipment supports the formats, then you should see the same results. If your audio equipment does not support one of the formats, then it will most likely be transcoded by Plex Media Server.
I’m not familiar with the GoogleTV devices, but it seems odd that it would not support EAC3 audio. Hopefully someone with hands-on experience can chime in.
I resolved the transcoding issue with the Fire TV 4K (2nd Gen), and now all the files in my library with EAC3 and DTS audio play directly without any problems.
To make it clear for anyone facing the same issue, I recommend downloading the AIADA64 app. With it, you can check all the audio and video codecs available on your device.
