No local trailers play before movies, no matter what...

I set the OpenPHT trailers setting to 2
I set the PLEX server to priorities local agent and media
I forced a refresh of all libraries
I’m using the latest OpenPHT 1.7.1
Latest Plex Server as of the time of this posting

I have sub-directories for /trailers under each folder for movies, like so…

movies//Trailers

Nothing I do seems to work.

i may be mistaken, but this feature is for playing online trailers before a movie, not for ones you have saved in a subdirectory

Nope, it’s for local too.
The action of pulling trailers from the web is a plexpass thing.

If you make a trailers sub-directory, you can have trailers.
Mine show in the “EXTRAS” areas of each movie, but never play before a showing.

enabling the setting in openpht, it plays x amount of random? online trailers (from movies you have in your collection i believe) - not from the actual movie your playing from other movies.

kind of like you would get in a movie theatre.

i will ask Kwiboo if its suppose to play local trailers or not if are available, i suspect the answer will be no.

From the instructions at PLEX…

"Have Trailers in your Library

You’ll also need to make sure you have some trailers in your movie Library. If you’re a Plex Pass subscriber, you can have trailers automatically added to most movies. All users are also able to add local trailer files."

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202934933

This page clearly outlines that PlexPass users will get them added automatically, but you can add your own locally.

the question is NOT can you add local trailers, everyone knows you can, there is no point quoting the manual

the question is, whether the setting in openpht "Number of cinema trailers before movies’ is applicable to local trailers or not, ‘cinema trailers’ is the key word. i.e you dont go to a cinema to watch a movie and it shows you a trailer of the movie your about to watch, you see other trailers from other movies before the actual movie starts, which is exactly what OpenPHT does currently.

I’m quoting the manual because it states that the feature I’m talking about (play local trailers before a move) is a real thing outlined clearly in the documentation.

“The Cinema Trailers feature lets you have some trailers automatically play in front of a movie to help recreate that real cinema experience!”

You see, the way this works is that when the library refresh and updates happen, it goes and picks up all the trailers.
(stored on the drive in a TRAILERS folder or using a -trailer.ext file naming convention.

Then, before you play a move, it plays the number of trailers you set to play, and picks them from OTHER movies in the library.
NOT the one you’re watching of course.

This is what that page says, and how the feature works.

Only it isn’t in my case. (and several other peoples cases too based on my research)

I’m not asking if this feature exists, nor am i misunderstanding the documentation.
I’m asking what I can do to resolve the issue.

Now, IF the functionality I’m referring DOESN’T exist, then the documentation is wrong - in MANY places.

nowhere in that manual nor the actual Cinema trailers settings in plex server settings does it explicitly say or give the option that that -->>> Cinema Trailers <<— feature will play back local trailers.

it simply says you can add local trailers to your library, it does not say they will be part of Cinema Trailers

the plex server settings for --> ‘Cinema Trailers’ <— are quite clear,

  • Include Cinema Trailers from movies in my library
  • Include Cinema Trailers from new and upcoming movies in theaters
  • Include Cinema Trailers from new and upcoming movies on Blu-ray

all 3 of these settings are talking about playing back trailers from OTHER MOVIES - not the one you are currently playing

if you cant understand that the Cinema trailers feature is not the same as just having local trailers, thats on you

Case closed.

Well then…

Let’s be clear, I can - and do - understand how this feature works, and I got that understanding DIRECTLY from the documentation.

…Yes it does.

I tried to point this out above by including the line from the documentation that says this.

In fact the section is titled:
“Cinema Trailers & Extras”

Not :

“Cinema Trailers, Local Trailers & Extras”

There is NO distinction made between “Cinema Trailers” and “trailers added manually”.

In fact, it clearly explains that the requirement for this feature to work in the section titled “Have Trailers in your Library”.

It reads…

You’ll also need to make sure you have some trailers in your movie Library. If you’re a Plex Pass subscriber, you can have trailers automatically added to most movies. All users are also able to add local trailer files"

Note how it explains that PP subscribers get the add automatically and then states that ALL USERS are “also able to add local trailer files”

Note how it emphasizes that we will “need to make sure you have some trailers in your movie Library”?

Also, for the lat time, I KNOW that the feature to play Cinema Trailers before movies will play Cinema Trailers from OTHER MOVIES and not the one your are WATCHING.
I NEVER said this was what was expected, nor did I feel a need to clarify that point because it’s silly to assume that is the way this feature works.

The idea of playing Cinema trailers before watching a movie is understood to include trailers from your local drive.

These movies can be placed there automatically if you are a Plex Pass holder.
Plex Pass holders can also add trailers themselves in sub-folders or using file naming patterns.

ALL THESE TRAILERS ARE INDEXED AND PART OF THE LIST OF AVAILABLE TRAILERS PLAYED BEFORE A MOVIE

If you pick 2 trailers to play before movies then TWO RANDOM trailers from the list of available trailers are played.
The breadth of trailer availability is broader for Plex Pass holders.

Non Plex Pass holders can only expect to play trailers from the ones they add manually.

This is how the feature functionality reads.
If this is NOT how it works, then the documentation needs to be changed to CLEARLY outline this behavior.

You have not yet linked to or otherwise shown me that this feature performs any other way.

Also, if you don’t mind, either I or an admin will determine when this “Case” is “Closed”.

I think if you actually understood how the cinema trailers feature worked, you’d be asking in the PMS subforums and not the OpenPHT/Rasplex client subforum.

OpenPHT supports the cinema trailer feature, but OpenPHT only plays trailers queued by PMS.

When you have this feature enabled, OpenPHT notifies PMS only how many trailers you want, and does not specify what trailers you wish to view, nor what the source of the trailers are. PMS then creates a media playlist queue and sends that list to OpenPHT.

So anything concerning trailer source issues needs to go the appropriate PMS subs and not here.

Now I will say, I’ve never seen Cinema Trailers use a local source. Not a single time. So I don’t believe Plex Inc has incorporated local assets into the Cinema Trailer queuing mechanism. However, whether or not they should be included is a conversation for another subforum.

Thanks for this Benjaminwolf.

You are correct, regardless of how this feature works, this is the wrong forum.
I hadn’t considered the origin of the functionality when I posted.

First I will test using PMP and then I will move this there.

The description of this feature is poorly described in the PLEX documentation if this feature doesn’t work this way.
Something I’ll discuss with them if this is the case.

I marked your comment as “Insightful” - because it was.

So, it’s official.
The documentation is correct - and I interpreted it correctly.

This works exactly as I suspected it should.

It is playing 2 (however many I choose) trailers at random from my local library, and I am not a Plex Pass holder.
It’s grabbing them from the /Trailers folders in any/all of my movie folders.

Now, to figure out what cause this to start working!!!
