No longer able to view downloaded YouTube videos via DLNA

Server Version#:1.30
Player Version#: 1.60.1.3413-533a7645

I have been using the Plex Media Server DLNA function for several years without any problems to stream downloaded YouTube videos (1080p MP4). However, since a few days ago, new videos now exhibit extreme stutter/freezing with tiny fragments of audio, in other words, totally unwatchable. I was using PMS 1.25 when this started, and updating to the most recent version has not fixed the problem. Old videos still play, and the new ones that are glitching via DLNA, play without problems on my Windows 10 PC when viewed on the VLC app. Also, I can view these new problematic YouTube videos via PMS DLNA if I first re-code them with Handbrake. This suggests to me that YouTube has changed the video/audio codec they are using, which PMS does not support.

  • The strange thing is, that said videos will play for about 2 minutes before the freezing starts, always at exactly the same spot (time). This behavior makes me wonder if this is some sort of attempt by YouTube to discourage people from watching their content as a download, rather than live-streaming, because it eliminates all their advertising. (?)

While such a video is playing/glitching via DLNA, the PLEX Dashboard info flickers, with brief displays of “Nothing is currently being played”, and also shows that the video is 1080p (H.264), and Audio: Unknown (AAC Stereo).

Is this something that can be fixed within Plex Media Server?

I am experiencing the exact same issue, videos downloaded from YouTube seem to become unstable around the 3 minute mark.

Thanks for the post! It makes me feel a bit better to know that I’m not the only one experiencing this problem. I would love to know what’s causing it.
