No remote connection to server

Server: TS-451-DeU
Current PMS version - 1.21.1.3876
QTS Version: 4.5.1.1540

I recently upgraded from my old QNAP TS-469-Pro to the TS-451-DeU.
Both media servers are running fine locally, but I am unable to remotely connect to the new server. Old server is working fine remotely but I want to take it offline and replace it with the new one.

Relevant ports are forwarded on the router.
The network settings (apart from the IP Address  ) are the same on both NAS. I only have 1 cable connected to the new NAS at the moment, had port trunking setup, but went back to a basic 1 cable connection to see if the problem is port trunking related, but still cannot connect with a single cable.

I stopped the server and looked for any stray processes but everything there is fine.
I looked in the plex media server log for any errors, this is all I find:

Already looked through the QNAP FAQ and the plex help, but no luck so far.
Any ideas where to further look for a solution?

I don’t think that snippet of your logs is going to help a lot.
What do you mean you’ve forwarded “the relevant ports”?
From your description it sounds like you’re trying to use the same public port for both NAS – that’s not going to work. You’ll need to have an individual port for each endpoint.

e.g.

  • public port 32405 pointing to your old NAS’ local IP address @ port 32400 (local)
  • public port 32406 pointing to your new NAS’ local IP address @ port 32400 (local)

With the Plex remote access settings of each server configured accordingly (manually set public port of the old server configured as 32405 and 32406 for the new server).

Ah, sorry I wasn’t clearer.

It is currently set up as you described with each server on a different port. And these ports are forwarded to the internal 32400 on their relevant IP addresses.

The old server port is publicly accessible, however the new server port shows a connection refused.

The old server is running QTS: 4.3.4.1463
It’s the last available update that server will get. Maybe something was changed with how ports are opened/blocked in the newer versions?

Can you access/see the public port associated with the new server from outside your home network (e.g. using a service such as canyouseeme.org)?

There should be no substantial change to how remote access works within Plex.
I take it you’re not using some fancy port that might be blocked by your router or ISP?

I can access my old server, new server is giving a connection refused.
I’ve also tried the default 32400 and no luck. Both plex servers are the same version with the same settings. So it looks like it is an issue with the QNAP server.

If you cannot access the public IP address of your router over the public port you specified in your port forward, this implies it’s more in the area of your ISP and/or your router.

Have you tried using a different port?
Have you tried forwarding the old server’s port to the new one instead? – this way you can rule out if it’s an issue with your QNAP

Oh wow, you are right, it was the router. The old server port forwarding was at the top of the table, and the new server was at the bottom in the router. I just changed the addresses and left the ports unchanged, so the new server was at the top and old old at the bottom. And I changed around the ports in the plex servers. Suddenly the new server started to work, and the old one didn’t. Looks like I must have hit some undocumented limit for the amount of port forwards the router can support.

Thanks so much for pointing me in that direction. I’ve been tearing my hair out all day and didn’t think of looking at the router as the issue.
