*Solved* - Remote Access no longer working - QNAP Server

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392
Player Version#: Does not seem to be player dependent

Hello - There seems to be no end of existing topics with this same issue, remote access worked - now it doesn’t, but after reading quite a number of them I have not found the solution to my issue. Here are my setup’s details:

  • PMS Ver: 1.22.3.4392 configured to listen to manual port 32400

  • Server: QNAP TVS-882 running QTS 4.5.2.1630

  • ISP: Comcast/Xfinity - I am not using their Xfi service, I have my own router and modem

  • Router: Asus RT-AX88U configured with a DHCP reservation for the NAS, uPNP is disabled, configured to forward port 32400 to the NAS IP address, IPv6 is enabled

  • Double NAT: No

  • CGNAT: No

  • Modem: Arris SB8200

I have been running a Plex server for many, many years without issue. It’s only been within the last 6-8 weeks that I have noticed that direct remote access no longer works. People are able to access my server but its through the indirect route which provides lower quality than would otherwise be possible.

On the remote access page I will occasionally see green that, within a few seconds, turns to red. There is no firewall that I am aware of on the QNAP NAS that is enabled. However, if I check CanYouSeeMe.org and check port 32400 the connection times out.

I’m ready to answer any and all questions to get to the bottom on this. What screenshots or logs would be most helpful?

Thank you in advance.

Attaching server logs files. Please do let me know what more I can do to work towards resolution with this issue.

thank you

Is this contribution useful? I have the same problem

same shiznat here. Been running without an issue for years. Now something changed with an update within the past week that is pissing me off to no end. I have done verything except delete and reinstall my plex library which I am NOT going to do. reset the router, disabled firewall, etc.

Is there a way to reset server settings to baseline default and start over without deleting or effecting the library. There should be a reset ‘network settings’ button somewhere.

what’s the problem here?

In the logs I see the reachability test results in “0” (false)

Whichever port the local PMS is telling Plex.tv to use simply is not Open & Forwarded.

For those with ISP-provided modems their firmware updates come in without your control… and can reset it (lose the config you put in) without your knowledge

Stupid question:

  1. QNAP has a DEFAULT adapter set as the gateway or is it automatic ?
  2. QNAP has a static IP address ?
  3. QNAP firewall software active ?

I have 6 servers at any given time. They all have remote access. it’s entirely automatic. I attribute that to my router (pfsense) providing the UPNP/NAT-PMP.

I’m willing to help work through this if I can

@ChuckPA Comcast is having issues with port forwarding, they moved the router setting from their router to a web page and has not worked well since.

As an example, I can port forward 32400 but no other ports I try to forward will work when I set it up. Drives me bananas, I have been working with Comcast on this, even set up a brand new router today, and still nothing. I am trying to get them to elevate it but for now the only port I can get remote to work on is 32400 and honestly, I am wondering when my ISP provider will screw that one up too.

Just an FYI, kind of wondering if they are having the same problem.

I am not using Comcast’s modem/router.

I also have Comcast. They moved into this area and built a whole new cable plant.
When I learned they would have ultimate control of the modem & router (their roaming hotspot), I decided to go my own way.

  1. Buying my modem
  2. Building my own edge router/firewall,
  3. I have a beautifully simple GUI-based interface which
    a. works
    b. is secure
    c. extremely extensible as I grow even more
  4. It hasn’t failed, gone offline, or behaved in any unexpected manner since I brought it online in December (when Comcast connected).

I’m willing to share how I do it and, if you want control of your implementations, help you do it.

If you haven’t guessed, I don’t like SDN in my home and, given internet goes out often here in the north east, want to be able to control the network manually.

This may be a little bit lame of an answer, but I had the same problem the last two times I updated firmware on QNAP and updated Plex to the latest non-beta version. Both times I received the notice about Plex being unable to connect to the server securely. Both times I was able to restart the server AFTER the Plex upgrade, and voila, it works. I did notice it did not immediately work after the second reboot.(1st reboot was part of the QNAP firmware upgrade.) If i tried to Launch Plex from the App Center, the message was “Please Wait while Plex initializes” or something of that nature. After about 4 minutes, it worked. So like with Windows, for me, a reboot fixed it.

I’ve restarted many, many times and that has not helped.

I have my own modem and router. Neither is home built and I am not interested in that level of involvement, thank you though.

I just want help from the Plex staff or community diagnosing and issue that has come up after years and years of being able to use Plex remotely without issue. The set up is not usually difficult.

I think I’ve found the issue with my setup. On my QNAP I opened up the control panel, then system, then security.

I had the option selected that reads “Allow connections from the list only”. The list only contained my local subnets.

Once I changed this setting to “Allow all connections” Plex is indicating that my server is accessible externally and port testing websites now say that port 32400 is open.

I don’t know if I unthinkingly changed this option at some point recently or a QNAP update changed this setting but I think this was the culprit. I’ll monitor the situation and post back here in the next couple days.

Just closing this topic out. My issue was solved using the info in the post I marked as the solution. Hopefully this helps someone else with a QNAP in the future!
